Memorial Ruck Held In Recognition Of Officer Jackson Winkeler

A memorial ruck was held on January 5th on the one-year anniversary of the death of Florence Regional Airport Officer Jackson Winkeler.
The light rain did not discourage the participating officers and public safety members who wore their work gear for the ruck.
In honor of Winkeler’s unit number, Airport 6, the group walked six miles from the Latta Police Department to the Dillon County Judicial Center. Winkeler’s patrol car, which has been retired, led the ruck and was driven by Winkeler’s father, Mark.
Sgt. Zane Bryant of the Latta Police Department said the turnout for the event despite the cold and rain was a testament to Winkeler’s impact on the community. He said this was a small sacrifice for the large sacrifice of Winkeler. Winkeler’s family was present for the event as well as his pastor, Rev. James Orr, of Pyerian Baptist Church, who offered prayer before the ruck began.
The fund initially raised from the ruck will be used to put Winkeler’s name on the Running 4 Heroes race car driven by Mike Harmon in February’s Daytona race.
Bryant said they are doing everything in increments of six in honor of Winkeler’s unit number. A 6 for 6 Foundation has been formed. They hope to be able to award sCholarships with funds raised from the event.
