Unity In Christ Prayer March Held

By Dr. James Orr
Nearly 130 persons including over 20 local pastors joined together to share bonds of love and bridge gaps of bigotry and hatred. The pastors had been meeting by Zoom each week since June 16, 2020. Out of their discussion came a desire to show the Dillon Community a church that is united on issues of justice, inequality and the truth that Jesus Christ is the answer for our past sins and our present turmoil.

Rev. Leo Chapman, Jr. of Bethel AME and Dr James Orr of Pyerian Baptist opened with welcome and explanation of the walk. Rev. Joseph Graham of New Memorial Temple and Rev. James Smith of East Dillon Baptist then opened in prayer before the actual walk from Main Street United Methodist to the Dillon County Courthouse. The walk was escorted by the Dillon City Police. Upon arrival at the courthouse, Dr. Orlando McCauley, Jr. of St Matthews AME and Rev. Joe Grice of the Dillon Church of God prayed. then every participant was given time to pray and the closing prayer was given by Dr. Rodney McCorkle of Manning Baptist. The pastors recognize that this was only a beginning of a conversation that needs to continue to build understanding and relationship across racial, economic, and denominational lines in our community. As the weeks progressed toward a prayer walk of unity the number of pastors involved continued to grow. They vow that this is not the end but a continuation of a good start.

The pastors will meet Saturday, July 11 at 9 a.m. at Pyerian Baptist Church of Floyd Dale for a prayer breakfast and conference to seek other ways in which they can interact for the Kingdom of Jesus and the sake of the citizens of Dillon County. A further meeting will be hosted by St Matthew AME of Hamer in August. All clergy are invited to attend.
