BATTLEBORO – Angus “Gene” Hayes, age 79, passed away on Monday, September 17, 2018. Born in Dillon County, SC on December 30, 1938, he was the son of the late Bliss Hayes and Grace Scott. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Rebecca “Becky” Walls; granddaughter, Katelyn Vick; brothers, Paul Hayes, Virgil Hayes, and Nathan Hayes; and sister, Pat Miller.
Gene received his 50-year pin with Sudan Shriners. He attended both Bethany Baptist Church and Grace Baptist Church. Gene was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew him.
Gene leaves behind to cherish his memory, wife of 58 years, Shirley M. Hayes; daughters, Tammy H. Hale and husband, Ronald, of Halifax, and Betty H. Vick and husband, Christopher, of Nashville. She is also survived by grandchildren, Justin Walls and wife, Mandy, Ashley Walls Naylor and husband, Jon, Laurin Wetter and husband, James, Heather Vick, Alex Strickland; great-grandchildren, Jayden Walls, Brailynn Walls, and Macey Wetter; brothers, Bobby Hayes of Sanford, Richard Hayes of Mebane; sisters, Lois Hayes of Burlington, Judy Hayes of Latta, SC; and several nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, September 20, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services with Pastor George Moore and Pastor David Proctor officiating.
Entombment will follow the service at Rocky Mount Memorial Park Chapel on the Hill Mausoleum.
Visitation with the family will be from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. prior to the service in the Atrium of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home.
