Guardian ad Litem Volunteers Needed

Nothing describes summer vacation better than long, hot days, playing outside, swimming and catching fireflies at night. Summertime is a time for kids to unwind without a worry in the world. The more than 4,000 South Carolina children in foster care are no different.
Being a volunteer with the Cass Elias McCarter Guardian ad Litem (GAL) Program allows you to be part of a child’s life by getting to know them, listening to their wishes and advocating for their best interest in Family Court proceedings. You can do this by simply building trust and rapport while visiting a child once a month. If you can give approximately three hours a month to a child in foster care, you can make a difference in a child’s life.
Summer weather is a great time to go outside, throw the ball around or help a child write his/her name in sidewalk chalk. Even a small gesture can mean so much to a child. Become a volunteer Guardian ad Litem today.
GAL volunteers must complete a free, 30-hour online or classroom training, which teaches volunteers about the Family Court system, how to recognize abuse and neglect and how to communicate with children, foster parents and every party involved in the case. For more information about training and how to become a GAL volunteer, visit gal.sc.gov or call Brian Mercer at 843-774-5973.
