Latta Lady Vikings Edge Out Andrews,1-0, In Softball
The Latta Lady Vikings edged Andrews 1-0 in varsity softball action played in Latta on Friday, March 9.
In the top of the seventh inning, Andrews loaded the bases with only 1 out. However, Camryn Sawyer fielded a grounder, tagged the runner going to second, and threw to first to complete a double play and stop the tying run from crossing home plate.
Arica Gandy pitched the entire 7 innings and allowed 5 hits, struck out 3, and walked 1 to claim the win.
C. McCants pitched 6 innings and allowed 3 hits, 1 earned run, struck out 12, and walked 2 to be tagged with the loss.
Latta scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Madison Owens connected for 1 hit and the only rbi in the game. She also garnered 2 walks.
Camryn Sawyer and Jayla Jackson each connected for a hit in 3 at-bats.
Andrews” B. Brewington, C. Samson, C. McCants, F. Calloway, and T. Lambert each connected for 1 hit in 3 at-bats.
Andrews only committed 1 error while Latta was guilty of 3 errors.

Dillon Wildcats Suffer First Loss Of Season
The Dillon Wildcats suffered the first loss of the season, 6-3, to the South Florence Bruins at home on Wednesday, March 7, in varsity baseball action.
Dillon’s starting pitcher, Rae-Rae McGirt, sat South Florence down in 1-2-3 fashion in the top of the first inning.
In the bottom of the first inning, Dillon took a 1-0 lead off a walk to Dillon’s #9 and a hit by Davis Cook.
In the top of the second inning, Dillon once again retired South Florence in 1-2-3 fashion thanks to a good catch by the right fielder to get out 3.
Dillon managed a single in the bottom of the second inning by #8, and Dillon was unable to get a run across home plate.
Dillon placed a run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning to take a 2-0 lead.
South Florence placed 3 runs on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead.
The Bruins added another run in the top of the fifth and managed to keep the Wildcats off the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth.
In the top of the sixth inning, South Florence added 2 runs and held Dillon to only 1 run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Ethan Goodale pitched 6 innings to claim the win. He allowed 5 hits, 3 runs of which 2 were earned, walked 3, and struck out 5.
Will Hardee garnered a save. He pitched only 1 inning for South Florence and did not allow a hit, a run, walked no one, and struck out one.
Jon-Mitchell Carter was tagged for the loss. He pitched 2 innings and allowed 3 hits, 3 earned runs, walked 3, and struck out 3.
Dillon was led by Davis Cook with 2 hits and 2 rbi in 3 at-bats while Austin Tyndall picked up 2 hits in 3 at-bats. Noah Carter also picked up a hit and a rbi in 2 at-bats.
South Florence was led by Niles Vereen with a double and a rbi in 3 at-bats while Hardee picked up 2 hits and a rbi in 4 at-bats. Austin Moore managed a hit in 4 at-bats.
Dillon is 3-1 for the season.
Dillon will host Marlboro on Friday, March 9, at 6:30 p.m.

Latta Lady Vikings Suffer Heartbreaker Loss To West Florence
The Latta Vikings returned home Wednesday, March 7, after suffering a heart-breaker 2-1 loss to West Florence, a non-conference foe.
The Latta Vikings led 1-0 going into the bottom of the fifth inning by great pitching by Noah Henderson who struck out 10 batters in 5 innings.
Latta got on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning off a wild pitch by H. Hardin.
The game remained that way until West Florence tied it up when E. White grounded out and a run scored.
West Florence was able to push the winning run across home in the bottom of the sixth inning on a sac fly by Brennan Herndon.
Billy Barlow picked up the win for West Florence. He pitched 2 innings and allowed l hit, no runs, struck out 4, and walked no one.
H. Harvin opened on the mound for West Florence. He was relived by N. Skean and Q. Manning.
Manning picked up the save as he got the final 3 outs on Latta.
West Florence’s pitchers managed 9 strike outs in the game.
Latta’s Hunter Sawyer was tagged with the loss. He allowed only 1 hit, 1 run, struck out 2, and walked no one.
Dylan Brewer managed a double in 3 at-bats for Latta while Chandler Matthews connected for a single in 2 at-bats.
West Florence’s Q. Manning was perfect at the plate picking up a single in his only trip while C. Wallace picked up a single in 3 at-bats.
West Florence did not commit an error in the game, and Latta was guilty of only one.

Latta JV Softball Team Wins Doubleheader Over Lamar
The Latta Junior Varsity softball team returned home from Lamar on Thursday, March 8, with 2 wins in the double header.
In game one, Latta claimed a 10-0 win in the 10-run rule shortened game.
The Latta team exploded in the second inning for 5 runs off the bats of Jena Stutler, Jordan Perritt, and Ava Rogers who all picked up rbi.
Latta’s Allison Carter allowed 2 hits over 3 innings, struck out 6, and did not allow a run to claim the win.
Lamar’s Tatum W. also pitched 3 innings and was tagged with the loss. She allowed 10 runs, 8 hits, and walked 1.
Latta’s Jena Stutler connected for 2 hits in 3 at-bats including a single in the first inning and a home run in the second inning. She picked up 4 rbi in the game. Jena Stutler also garnered 2 hits in 3 at-bats.
Lamar’s Maddie H. managed a single in the first inning.
In game two, Latta overpowered Lamar 11-1.
Latta’s Jena Stutler picked up where she left off in game one. She collected a total of 4 rbi as she hit a triple in the second inning and a double in the fifth.
Latta placed a run on the scoreboard in the first inning. Lamar knotted the game at 1 in the bottom of the first inning.
However, once again, the second inning proved to be a most productive one for the Latta team as they placed 7 runs on the scoreboard. Elizabeth Brown, Ragan Bethea, Breleigh Grant, and Jena Stutler all picked up rbi.
The Latta team managed 11 hits in the game including a home run by Elizabeth Brown. Jena Stutler connected for 3 hits in 4-at bats. Ragan Bethea, Jordan Perritt, and Breleigh Grant each garnered multiple hits.
Latta did not commit an error in the game.
Ragan Bethea picked up the win. In 4 innings, she struck out 4, did not allow any hits, or any runs.
Maggie D. was charged with the loss. She pitched 5 innings and allowed 11 hits, 11 runs, and struck out 2.
Lamar’s Maggie D. was perfect at the plate as she connected for a hit in 1 at-bat.

Latta JV Picks Up 8-5 Win
The Latta Junior Varsity Softball team picked up an 8-5 win on Monday, March 5, over Darlington in a game played in Latta.
Jena Stutler pitched the entire 7-inning game to pick up the win for Latta. She allowed 7 hits, 5 runs, struck out 3, and walked no one.
M. Weatherford was tagged with the loss for Darlington. She pitched 6 innings and allowed 8 hits, 8 runs, and struck out 5.
The Latta team managed a score in the bottom of the first inning.
Darlington scored 2 runs to take the lead. However, in the bottom of the third inning, Latta tied the game when Elizabeth Brown doubled and a run scored.
The bottom of the fourth inning proved to be the clincher for the Latta Junior Varsity girls as they placed 5 runs on the scoreboard.
Latta’s Allison Carter connected for 3 hits in 4 at-bats including a single, a double, a triple, and 4 rbi while Elizabeth Brown had multiple hits and a rbi.
Darlington’s K. Stone managed 2 hits in 4 at-bats.

Dillon Hands Marlboro Loss
The Dillon Wildcats handed Marlboro County a 9-0 loss at Dillon on Friday, March 9, in varsity baseball action.
Tristan Brigman pitched 4 innings and allowed 9 hits, struck out 8, walked 2, and allowed no runs to pick up the win.
Cory Gibson was tagged with the loss. He pitched 4 and 1/3 innings and allowed 9 hits, 7 runs of which 5 were earned, walked 1, and struck out 3.
The Wildcats got on the scoreboard with 2 runs in the bottom of the first inning, added 3 runs in the bottom of the third, 2 runs in the bottom of the fourth, and 2 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Dillon connected for 12 hits while holding Marlboro to only 1 hit garnered by Jett Herndon in his 2 at-bats.
Dillon’s Davis Cook connected for 3 hits including a double and 3 rbi in his 4 trips to the plate while Ty’Quan Rogers connected for 3 hits including a double and 2 rbi in his 4 at-bats. Jon-Mitchell Carter also had 3 hits including a double in his 4 at-bats.
Dillon committed 1 error in the game while Marlboro committed 2 errors.
Dillon will travel to Lake City today, Tuesday, March 13, for a 6:30 game.

Lake View Wild Gators Win 15-0 Over Marion
The Lake View Wild Gators handed the Marion Swamp Foxes a 15-0 decision in a 3-inning, 15-run rule game played in Lake View on Thursday, March 8.
The Wild Gators managed 9 hits and committed no errors in the game while Marion managed 2 hits by Teric Rivers who was perfect at the plate with 2 hits in 2 at-bats.
The Swamp Foxes were guilty of 4 errors in the game.
Deonte Roberts picked up the win for Lake View. He pitched 3 innings and allowed 2 hits, no runs, walked 4, and struck out 9.
Teric Rivers was charged with the loss. He allowed 2 hits, 3 runs of which were earned, walked 1, and struck out no one.
The Wild Gators’ De’Ante Bridgett connected for 3 hits including a triple, a double, and picked up 4 rbi in his 3 at-bats. Jett Lewis was also perfect at the plate with 2 hits and a rbi in 2 at-bats. Webb Cardwell garnered a double and 3 rbi in his 2 trips to the plate while Jonathan Davis connected for a double and 2 rbi in his 2 at-bats.
Lake View will travel to Mullins on Wednesday, March 14, at 5:30 p.m.

Latta Claims 12-0 Win Over Andrews
Latta’s McLeod Carmichael pitched a no-hitter as Latta claimed a 12-0 win over Andrews in 5 innings in a varsity baseball game played in Latta on Friday, March 9.
Carmichael struck out 6 and walked only one batter in the top of the fifth inning.
B. Powell was tagged with the loss for Andrews. He pitched 1 inning and allowed 6 hits, 6 earned runs, walked 2, and struck out no one. B. Johns pitched 2 innings and allowed 8 hits while D. Bourne pitched 1 inning and did not allow any hits.
Latta managed 14 hits in the game and did not commit an error while Andrews was guilty of 2 errors.
The Latta Vikings jumped out to an early lead picking up run in the bottom of the first inning when Russ Rogers singled and a run scored.
Latta added 10 runs in the bottom of the second inning off numerous hits including an inside-the-park home run by Jordan Hayes.
Latta’s final run came in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Latta’s Jordan Hayes doubled, hit a home run, and picked up 3 rbi in 3 at-bats while McLeod Carmichael connected for 2 singles and 2 rbi in 3 trips to the plate. Deonte Stanley doubled and picked up 2 rbi in his 3 at-bats. Chandler Matthews singled and picked up 2 rbi in his 3 trips to the plate. Russ Rogers had 2 singles and 1 rbi in 3 at-bats. Pierce Watson garnered 2 singles and a rbi in 3 at-bats. Hunter Sawyer had 2 singles in 3 trips to the plate. Dylan Brewer singles and picked up a rbi in 3 at-bats.
Latta is 3-2 for the season and 1-0 in Region 7-2A.
