Blenheim Ginger Ale Is Topic Of Winter Historical Society Meeting

Forgotten by some, unknown to others, the artesian mineral springs near Blenheim, South Carolina, was the topic for the winter meeting of the Dillon County Historical Society held at B&C Restaurant on January 18, 2018. Mr. Richard Schafer of Schafer Distributing Company and South of the Border Tourist Complex gave a vivid account of the discovery of the springs by James Spears, a Whig who was trying to escape the Tories in 1981, until it was purchased by the Schafer family in 1993.
Mr. Schafer stated that believing the mineral water had medicinal properties, it was used widely by residents of the area for various ailments. This, the springs were purchased by Dr. C.R. May and A.J. Matheson, and Blenheim Bottling Company was opened in 1903. Jamaican ginger was added to the formula to dilute the strong mineral taste and smell. Patients were advised to drink the mineral water for various stomach disorders.
Purchased by the late Alan Schafer IN 1993, THE Blenheim philosophy is “to preserve the rich heritage and family tradition of making an old time ginger ale that has captured the heart of South Carolina and the many visitors to our state since the 1800’s. Our product will always remain pure and true to its historical beginnings, while moving into the future with new creations and expanding operations to ensure Good Ole Blenheim will be around for a long time.”
Mr. Schafer stated that, because of the demand for Blenheim Ginger Ale, a new facility with a larger capacity was erected at the Border; however great care was taken to maintain the quality and uniqueness of the original formula.
Blenheim Ginger Ale is now sold throughout the United States and internationally- hot, mild, and diet. He provided bottles of each for those in attendance to sample. Try the white-capped one (hot). It will cure what ails you.
