In an article on today’s front page of The Dillon Herald, Councilman Jack Scott refers to articles which appeared in last week’s issue of The Dillon Herald regarding the fact that the schools will no longer be receiving a portion of the Local Option Sales Tax money from the county. He states that we don’t need this conflict of interest going in the newspaper. We disagree. The newspaper is exactly where the public’s business needs to be.
Whether one agrees or disagrees with the action taken thus far by the Dillon County Council on this issue, one thing can be said for sure—this action was not hidden. It was discussed and action was taken in a public forum. The voters and the general public have an opportunity to know what action they have taken and now have the opportunity to voice their opinions accordingly. That’s the way government should work and appears to be working in this case.
The Dillon County Council should be commended for taking their action and doing the public’s business in the light despite what criticism may take place as a result of it. It’s hard to be a public official sometimes, but it is the job they sought and the responsibility that they took on when they accepted the position. Councilman Jack Scott shouldn’t try to suppress that. Let the sun shine in.
