East Students Participate in Walk To School Day

East Elementary School participated in SC Walk to School Day on March 10.

This day help initiate conversations with students and their families. Conversations include: Increasing physical activity and enhancing health; reducing traffic congestion, and improving air quality; teaching pedestrian, bicycle, and personal safety skills, and encouraging community involvement in Safe Routes to School programs.
The South Carolina SRTS program launched their first South Carolina Walk to School Day event in the spring of 2012 and nearly 150 schools participated.
In 2013, 188 schools participated! Many people are familiar with International Walk to School Day, which typically takes place every year the first Wednesday in October.
In 2011, more than 130 schools across South Carolina participated in International Walk to School Day.
In 2012, that number increased to over 200 schools. South Carolina had the highest rate of participation in the US according to the National Center for SRTS. In 2013, SC had 277 schools register and participate. Again, SC was ranked number one in participation in the US with one in every four schools participating!
Walk to School Days are a great way for parents, students, school personnel, and other community members to directly experience the trip to school on foot as they walk and bike with students.
Coach Jennifer Walters coordinated “the walk at school” and each class walked the inner fence of the campus twice.  Each student received a bracelet for participating.
