John David McNeil

John David McNeil, also known as “Deac”, was the son of the late Marie and Willie McNeil. He was born on April 18, 1934 in Dillon County and departed this life on March 30, 2011 at McLeod Medical Center after a brief illness.
He was educated in the public schools of Dillon County. He was joined in holy matrimony in November 1958 to the love of his life, Connie Mae Rose. To this union eight children were born. They lived a beautiful life together for 31 years until God called Connie home in 1989.
At an early age, he accepted Christ as his savior and joined Manning Baptist Church. After a few years, he became a member of New Jerusalem United Church of God, where he served faithfully until his passing. He served in various ministries within the church. He served as the Sunday School Superintendent and Male Chorus President. He also served with the Deacon and Trustee Ministries. “Brother,” as he was affectionately known by the New Jerusalem members for many years, worked relentlessly along side his pastor and spiritual father, Bishop Carlton Thompson, to construct the present day edifice.
Literally and figuratively speaking, John wore many hats. He was employed as a textile worker at Image Carpets for 36 years. Farming was also a vital part of his livelihood. He cultivated various grain crops and tobaccos in various communities such as: Little Rock, Latta and Lake View. He also had a passion for horticulture and gardens. He always planted enough for family, everyone in the community and anyone in need. John was known as a man with a big heart for giving.
In the home, he has a very gentle and quiet spirit. As the old saying goes, he walked softly, but the children knew he carried a big stick. He was a great provider and did so with seemingly unending energy. He lived a godly life before his children and taught them the ways of God. He demonstrated how to be a wonderful husband and a loving father. He was the best. He was a father figure to many in the community and in his church.
He leaves to cherish fond memories: eight children, John (Sherry), Glenn (Gwen), James, Larian (Pamela), Sharon (Arthur), Timothy (Shawnda), Emerald (Darrell) and Memre; one brother, Mr. Samuel McNeil; two sisters, Mrs. Carolyn Manning and Mrs. Mary Kate Bethea; five brothers preceded him in death, Isaac (Jake), Daniel, Preston, LC and Lee Junior, four sisters-in law; sixteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, cousins, other relatives and friends.
