David M. White, Sr.

David Monroe White, Sr., 79, of Dillon, SC died early morning Friday, May 6. Son of the late F.M. White, Jr. and Pearl Baldwin White, he was born October 30, 1931, in Whiteville, NC. The family moved to Dillon in 1947 where David graduated from Dillon High School and then attended Mars Hill College in North Carolina. David served our country proudly in the United States Army in Austria during the Korean Conflict. Following his military service, he married the former Carolyn Jean Cowden of Knoxville, TN in 1955, after which they made their home in Dillon.
David was the owner and operator of his family business, Motor Parts and Equipment Company in Dillon, and along with his brothers, owned and operated several NAPA stores located throughout the South Carolina Lowcountry. He and his brothers are also partners in White Brothers Properties and M&D Rentals. After retirement in 1993 David and Carolyn embarked upon a lifelong dream of traveling almost full time across the North American continent traveling hundreds of thousands of miles in their Airstream motor coach making lifelong friends along the way. David was an active member of the Airstream Wally Byam Caravan Club for 40 years serving terms of office which included Treasurer, 1st and 2nd VP, President, Chairman of the Board and Director.
David was a member of First Baptist Church in Dillon. He was a former member of the Dillon Kiwanis Club, serving a term as president and elected Kiwanian of the Year in 1967. He was an avid member of the Dillon Amateur Ham Radio Club and served as treasurer for many years. He was an Explorer Scout Troop Leader, Boy Scouts of America in earlier years, and a long time member of the Dillon County Rescue Squad. As a leading merchant of Dillon he was involved in numerous community activities.
David is survived by his wife Carolyn, his children: Carol Ann White Reid (Andrew), Cecilia White McIntyre (Douglas), Cynthia Jean White, and David M. White, Jr.; grandchildren: David Allen Glenn, Matthew Thomas Glenn, Danielle Page White, Anna Gabriella McIntyre; and step-grandchildren: Jessica D. Reid and Courtney A. Reid; three brothers H.M. (Mickey), W.M. (Billy), and F.M. (Fim) White.
In lieu of flowers, David’s wish was that memorials be made to First Baptist Church, 400 N. 4th Ave., Dillon, SC 29536, or Community Care Hospice of Dillon, 805 N. 8th Avenue, Dillon, SC 29536.
The family will receive guests at the home, 338 Johnson Drive, Dillon. A private burial will be held on Sunday followed by a Memorial Service on Tuesday, May 10 at Cooper Funeral Home located at 209 Black Branch Road, Dillon at 3:00 p.m.
