Lake View Students Collect ‘Pennies For Patients’

Students at Lake View High School recently participated in The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Patients program, one of the Society’s national School and Youth Programs that raises money to find cures for leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma while providing information and support services to patients and their families.
Pennies for Patients teaches students caring, sharing, respect for others, and the value of community service, in addition to supporting an important cause.
The need for cures is critical: nearly 895,000 Americans are battling blood cancers, and leukemia remains the leading cause of disease-related death among children under twenty.
The Lake View High School Senior Beta Club sponsors this yearly campaign.
“Our students’ involvement with The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society teaches them that they can make an important difference in the lives of others,” stated LVHS Senior Beta Club Member and Pennies for Patients Student Chairperson, Taylor Herlong.
Each year, the first block class collecting the most change receives a pizza party.
This year, Mr. Kenny Hayes’ first block students claimed that honor by collecting $306.51 during the three week time period. Second place honors went to Coach Kip Herlong’s class with $256.87, while Mrs. Samanthia Evans’ students claimed third place with $227.36.
Collectively, Lake View High School contributed $1,213.32 to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society from this year’s campaign.
“The support of Lake View High School students positively impacts our ability to find cures for blood cancers and provide patients and their families with support and information,” said Amy Harmon, Campaign Director of the South Carolina Chapter.
