A scam is circulating throughout Dillon County, according to Captain Cliff Arnette of the Dillon County Sheriff’s Office.
The Dillon County Sheriff’s Office has received a number of complaints from citizens stating that they had received a telephone call from a caller representing himself as a Dillon County Deputy and there was an arrest warrant for a particular individual (would give a name) and that they needed to send an amount of money or the person would be arrested, Arnette said.
The Dillon County Sheriff’s Office does not operate in that manner and no deputy with the Dillon County Sheriff’s Office will ever tell you that you can avoid arrest by paying him or her cash or by purchasing anything, especially a gift card.
If you receive such a call, it is without question a scam. Arrest warrants and bench warrants are issued by courts, not law enforcement. No amount of money paid to the deputy will result in the warrant being lifted. The Dillon County Sheriff’s Office is not a collection agency for the court.
