Clemson Extension Hosting Green Tomato Contest For Youth

The Clemson Extension Service is once again hosting a green tomato contest for 4-Hers.  The purpose is to learn the basics of gardening, to gain an understanding of the task involved for food production, to gain an understanding of the concept of planting date and fruit maturity, and to have fun with gardening.  The Rules and Regulations for the 2016 Green Tomato Contest are as follows:
-Four-H contestants must enter in the correct age division for the contest.
-Cloverbuds must be age 5 and must not be 9 years old on January 1st of the current year.
-Cloverleafs must be age 9 and must not be 12 years old on January 1st of the current year.
-Juniors must be age 12 and must not be 14 years old on January 1st of the current year.
-Seniors must be age 14 and must not be 19 years old on January 1st of the current year.
-Only mature, green tomatoes grown by the 4-H member will be accepted in this contest.
– There will be four categories of tomatoes accepted in this contest.  The categories will be:
*Biggest  
*Ugliest
*Prettiest
*Best Plate of 3
 Four-Hers should consult with their local County Clemson Extension Agent to determine the best varieties of tomato and planting time to have mature, green tomatoes at the contest time.
The biggest tomato will be determined based on the maximum circumference of the tomato.  The weight of the tomatoes will be used to determine the biggest tomato in case of a tie.
Contest Entries will be judged and displayed at the Eastern Carolina Agricultural Fair, Florence, SC October 11-15, 2016.
If you need tomato plants, please pick up tomatoes Clemson Extension Office on July 22, 2016.
