Elaine J. Dew

Elaine James Dew, 85, of Florence, SC, went home to the Lord on May 19, 2019. Elaine was born on July 29, 1933, along with a twin brother who did not survive birth, in Hopkinsville, KY. Her parents were William Jackson James and Lelia May Pendleton James. Elaine was pre-deceased by her beloved brothers, Doris Earl James and Elmo Jackson James and her sister, Ona Florene James Payne. Elaine graduated from Hopkinsville High School, and then became an RN at Baptist Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Memphis, TN. She was very proud of her nursing school and her fellow alumnus. She served on the board of the Baptist College of Health Sciences for many years until her illness rendered her, sadly, unable to travel. She met and married Duncan Mikell Dew, III, while he served at Ft. Campbell, KY., and they had 3 children: Mikell Dew (Julie) of Ridgeway, CO, Deborah Howard (Lee) of Powhatan, VA, and Mark Dew (Robin), of Knoxville, TN. Elaine is survived by her devoted husband, Mickey Dew, her three children and 6 grandchildren whom she adored: Kevin, Christopher and Stuart Howard, Lily McKee, Elijah and Chappell Dew. Elaine loved nursing and she loved traveling! She was employed by Stone Container for many enjoyable years. She performed volunteer work at the Arthritis Foundation. Her email address was TravelQueen! She, luckily, helped her grandson, Stuart, with his “Flat Stanley” book—because of the “TravelQueen”’s cosmopolitan contacts, Flat Stanley visited people on many continents. Elaine loved to play bridge and she loved her friends. Her hardest obstacle in becoming ill was the inability to maintain her treasured friendships. Elaine was a member of College Park Baptist Church for many years and valued her good friends and fellowship there Most importantly for a life well lived, Elaine loved our Lord, Jesus Christ. On Saturday, May 25 at 1:00 pm, there will be a memorial reception at Calvary Baptist Church in Florence, SC, at 915 Cherokee Rd, 29501. A light lunch will be offered at the reception. Any donations in Elaine’s memory may be sent to College Park Baptist Church, 1501 3rd Loop Rd., Florence, SC 29505.
