By Betsy Finklea
The Illuminated Scholars Program in conjunction with Dillon County held a seminar on Saturday evening on how to pay for college.
“It’s vital that we do all we can to give our future college students some of the necessary insight on paying for their education, as well as information regarding financial responsibility and career choices,” said Dillon County Administrator Tony Clyburn.
Eme Davis of Illuminated Scholars talked about how expensive college can be. He said there are plenty of jobs out there, but many people don’t have the education necessary for the jobs. He said that Illuminated Scholars is seeking to change the culture of Dillon County. He said many things are changing and Inland Port Dillon is already bringing change to the county.
Davis spoke about FAFSA, Pell Grants, LIFE Scholarships, and others. He said there is a S.C. Needs Based Grant as well as other state grants on SC.gov. He gave tips on successfully applying for these grants.
Work-Study was another option for paying for college.
He also spoke about scholarships and said that students need to be applying for these scholarships now. He suggested on looking at UNCF.org, scholarships.com, and fastweb.com.
County Administrator Tony Clyburn said “the time is now” to apply. It was suggested that students apply for a scholarship a day.
Student loans were given as a last resort to pay for college because one has to start paying back six months after one graduates.
Two representatives spoke about the WIOA program. They can help provide funds for training and school and can also help with training and education for veterans, dislocated workers, and the underemployed. One must be serious to participate in this program.
The Dillon County WIOA office is located on the campus of Northeastern Technical College (NETC).
County Administrator Clyburn said the county will be doing more community outreach and development. There are going to be further college seminars, ACT/SAT prep classes, career fairs, college fairs, and other activities.
Marcus McGirt of Latta and Tabitha James of Lake View shared their inspiring stories about their college and career journeys.
A meal was enjoyed after the presentation.
