Second Annual Latta BBQ Cookoff Held

By Betsy Finklea
The Second Annual Latta BBQ Cookoff was held Friday night and Saturday morning behind the old Latimer School in Latta.
The event is organized by Lyle Hayes. Five teams participated this year all vying for the title of Latta’s best BBQ.
The event was judged by celebrity judge, Norton Hughes of Shuler’s BBQ, and an anonymous panel of judges.
Money raised from the event is donated to the Latta Toy Drive which helps families of children recommended by Latta Elementary School.
The competition was very close this year with just a few points separating all teams. The event was won by Johnny Burden’s team which consisted of Johnny Burden, Scott Haselden, Joe Williamson, and Tony Gardner. The team won $650 which they generously donated back to the toy drive.
The teams placed as follows:
First Place-Johnny Burden’s team-166 points
Second Place-Brian Rock’s team-155 points
Third Place-Graves BBQ-149 points
Fourth Place-Johnson’s BBQ-142 points
Fifth Place-Double D (Derrick Cartwright’s team)-101 points
All had a great time competing to benefit a worthwhile cause.
