Renowned Children’s Author To Visit Local Schools

The Latta Schools Educational Foundation, along with Dillon District Four Schools, are excited to bring a renowned children’s author and speaker, David Schwartz, to our schools and communities on November 26 and 27.
Schwartz is an “Ambassador for Math”, helping children make connections between math and their world. His resume’ includes appearances at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, National Science Teachers Association, National Council of Teachers of English, as well as many reading and math councils and school events. David Schwartz is an author, former teacher and a presenter who invites children of all ages to ask BIG QUESTIONS-Why? How much? Where?. In 1985, he published his first book (“How Much Is a Million?), and it has sold over a million copies. Since then, he has published 50 more books that explore math and science. He wants to encourage children to observe the world around them, to ponder and to look at science and mathematics in dramatic new ways
In his presentations, which are highly consistent with the Common Core State Standards, Author David Schwartz shows students how exciting the results can be when children begin mathematical exploration inspired by literature. He shares an extraordinary collection of student-created work based on his many books, and he demonstrates how children gain real life math skills, problem solving experience, and a great sense of accomplishment while having so much fun that they forget they are learning math. During his assemblies, David’s captivating stories and preposterous props demonstrate how his own curiosity as a child led to the books he writes now.
Literature, science and math come together in nature books that David has written, including “Where in the Wild?”, “If you Hopped Like a Frog”, and the “Look Once, Look Again” and “Life Cycles” series. While projecting photographs and presenting fascinating facts about animals and plants, David shows how nature books can be an entry point for exploring many mathematical content standards.
David Schwartz will arrive at the Latta Ellis Performing Arts Center on Monday, November 26, working with LES and LMS students. He will present a program Monday evening for the families and children of Dillon County and the surrounding area at 6:00 p.m. in Latta at the Ellis Performing Arts Center. During this free event, Schwartz will show families how enjoyable math can be and how it can enrich our daily lives. With interaction demonstrations, as well as photos of families enjoying “math moments” together, David models ways that parents can promote children’s mathematical learning as part of their everyday activities. The presentation also makes the connection between books (both fiction and non-fiction) and math. Immediately after the presentation, there will be a book signing in the lobby of the EPAC where parents can purchase David’s books. On Tuesday, November 27, Schwartz will be in the Dillon Four School District performing for students from East, South, Stewart Heights, and Lake View Elementary schools.
Dr. John Kirby, Dillon School District Three, and Ray Rogers, Dillon School District Four, encourage parents of school age children to bring their children to the Ellis Performing Arts Center in Latta on Monday, November 26 at 6pm for a FREE educational Evening with David Schwartz, Author and Storyteller. Schwartz’ books will be for sale after the event, and he will be in the lobby to autograph books and meet with the audience.
