A devoted wife and loving mother, Carolyn Futrille Turnage was born in Columbia, S.C. on May 9th, 1934 as the daughter of Brookie Futrille and Mark Bellamy of Loris, S.C. Raised in Loris, SC, Carolyn attended Loris High School and graduated as an honor student and the class historian in 1952. Following graduation Carolyn moved to Florence, S.C. to further her education in typing, shorthand and clerical skills in support of employment in the secretary field. While in Florence, she met her late husband, Clayton “C.R.” Turnage. Married in 1953, Carolyn enjoyed a brief period as an Army wife while C.R. served out his enlistment. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Carolyn and C.R. moved to Dillon, S.C. at the urging of her late brother in law, Edward R. Turnage, to begin a new life. It was in Dillon where Carolyn spent her life raising four children and seven grandchildren. Carolyn began her secretary career in 1955, working in the insurance industry for long time mayor of Dillon, the late William “Billy” Carmichael. She worked in this position for over 25 years, until she left to work with her husband, C.R. in the family business, Turnage Plumbing and Electric. Her last 21 years of employment was with the Dillon County Sheriff’s Office where she remained until her retirement in January of 2013. Some of her fondest joys, however, were her time teaching Sunday school, and being involved in the WMU Program at First Baptist Church as well as her ministry to the inmates at the Dillon County Jail. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her “special” friends. Carolyn was a kind, sweet spirited person who you could always count on sharing a good cup of coffee and a good-hearted conversation.
Carolyn is survived by her children, Bruce (Sherrie) Turnage of Dillon, Michael (Helen) Turnage of Charleston, S.C., Cheryl (Luke) Barefoot of Conway, S.C. and Robin (Corbin) Rowe of Clarkesville, G.A., as well as grandchildren Courtney Turnage, Maddie Rowe, Logan Turnage, Rachel Barefoot and Rebecca, Olivia and Jack Rowe.
