Over the last few days our community has taken a significant loss, again. It seems like only last month that Hurricane Matthew left in his tracks flood waters, downed trees, and thousands without power. During the aftermath of that storm, our church was able to come together to do a food drive to reach out to those in need of a hot meal. First Presbyterian Church fed over 1500 people spaghetti in for two days.
However, when Hurricane Florence came through just last week, First Presbyterian Church of Dillon was impacted with major issues as water stood throughout our kitchen, fellowship hall, and many of our classrooms. This did not stop our church’s desire to help those in need. So, we searched for a way to connect with our community.
One of our members, Kristl Gibson, had some close friends from unit 133 Military Police Co, 51MP Battalion that were stationed in Dillon. With that great connection we were able to reach out to and provide them with hot meals and goodie bags to take on the road with them.
We simply posted something on our church’s Facebook® page, and with that one quick post our church members started cooking and prepping. We were able to provide food and goodies to the Guard, but we later found out that we had enough leftovers to reach many first responders and those who lost their homes due to the impact of this devastating storm
This was such a blessing for us as a church, and we are sure it was a blessing for those who we were able to serve. One thing that truly touched our members was the Guard telling us that this was the first time that their unit sat together as a family and ate a meal together. They truly were thankful and said, “they could taste the love in each bite.” When it was all said and done we reached out to hundreds of people in need, and were very thankful to serve our community as we show the love of Christ.
