SC Housing Makes Additional Funds Available

The South Carolina State Housing Finance and Development Authority (SC Housing) is making additional funds available in 2018-19, through its Housing Trust Fund (HTF) program, to assist eligible low-income families throughout the state. Funds will help low-income families make needed home repairs to keep their homes safe and livable. The program assists low-income families in addressing critical home repair needs that pose a risk to their health, safety, and well-being.
This year, SC Housing has raised the maximum amount of funding available to families to $25,000 per home. According to Bonita Shropshire, Interim Executive Director for SC Housing, “The move was made to keep up with the rising cost of building materials and other construction costs that are needed for these projects.” Without this assistance, these families would remain in structures that are unsafe. In 2016-17, the agency provided $5.9M in grants to assist 489 families with critical home repairs.
SC Housing administers the SC Housing Trust Fund program through non-profit organizations throughout the state. Approved nonprofit organizations, eligible to assist eligible low-income families apply for funding for home repairs, will be announced in July 2018. In addition to assisting with application submissions for funding consideration, the nonprofit organization will also hire a contractor to complete the work and oversee all work performed on the home. Interested families are encouraged to contact a participating nonprofit organization in their county for assistance.
