PHOTO GALLERY: Latta Defeats Chesnee In Game One Of State Title Series

The Latta Vikings win the first playoff game for the state 2A title in Latta on Saturday, May 11 5-3.
Chesnee’s K. Miller was hit by a pitch to arrive at first base and immediately stole second base before D. Williamson hit one up the middle for a single and a rbi. He arrived at second on a throwing error by the catcher. A balk advanced him to third where he scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Nate Lamb. N. Hammett hit one to right for a single and advanced to second on a throw. After one-half inning of play Chesnee was up 2-0 over the hometown boys.
The Latta Vikings were retired 3 up, 3 down in the bottom half of the first inning in part due to a great catch in right filed on a fly hit by Russ Rogers.
Latta got on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the second. Pierce Watson hit a grounder down the first base line for a stand-up double and advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a hit to the center field fence for a double by John Malcolm George to cut Chesnee’s lead to only 1.
An the bottom of the third inning, Latta’s McLeod Carmichael garnered a walk and advanced to second on an attempted pick-off throw to first and scored on Dylan Brewer’s hit hit between right and center field for a stand-up double that knotted the game at 2. Pierce Watson hit a grounder between third and the shortstop for a single and moved to second on the throw a run scored to give Latta a 3-2 lead. Deonte Stanley blooped one over first for a single and a rbi. Latta now led 4-2 after 3 innings of play.
Chesnee’s J. Foos hit one to deep right for a lead-off, stand-up double in the top of the fifth inning. B. Walker hit a hopper to deep short and beat the throw to first. Runners were on the corners. D.Williamson hit a chopper to second where the base runner was out, and the batter was safe at first with a rbi.
Latta’s Deonte Stanley garnered a walk to start the bottom of the sixth inning. Chase Mishue sacrificed bunted and moved Stanley to second where John Malcolm George hit a hot one by second and Stanley scored to give Latta a 5-3 lead that would be the final score of the game.
Each team managed 7 hits in the game while Chesnee committed 2 errors, and Latta committed one error.
McLeod Carmichael picked up the win. He pitched 7 innings and allowed 7 hits, walked no one, struck out 5, and allowed 3 runs of which 2 were earned. Nate Lamb suffered the loss. He pitched 6 innings and allowed 7 hits, walked 2, struck out 10, and allowed 5 runs of which 4 were earned.
Latta will travel to Chesnee today (Tuesday, May 15) for game two of the series.
