Roberts Part Of Award-Winning Choir

ATLANTA, GA (07/10/2017)—Georgia State University Singers member Ricky Roberts, of Latta, participated in a performance that won the singers first place this June at the 15th International Chamber Choir Competition Marktoberdorf 2017 in Marktoberdorf, Germany.
This prestigious competition featured twelve choirs from around the world. Led by Associate Professor of Music, Deanna Joseph, the Georgia State University Singers rehearsed for months for their first prize performance, which included Dominick Argento’s Walden Pond; Poulenc’s Salve Regina; and Dan Forrest’s Good Night, Dear Heart, among other selections.
The prize comes on the heels of a guest appearance on the hit television series, The Walking Dead, and also being featured in Atlanta Ballet’s performance of Carmina Burana.
“Taking first place is a huge honor of excellence for the singers and Georgia State’s music program,” Joseph said. “What’s even more amazing is that we received the highest possible rating on an international level.”
Noting the significance of this prize, Nickitas Demos, Interim Director of the Georgia State School of Music said, “We are extremely proud of this wonderful accomplishment and extend our warmest congratulations to our talented students and to Dr. Joseph.”
The group’s award garnered media coverage from two German newspapers, Spruchreif and Kreisbote, as well as several radio interviews. The students also participated in a master class with renowned Venezuelan conductor, Maria Guinard.
The Georgia State University Singers completed their 11-day tour to Austria and Germany on June 8.
