Lorene Arnette, of Dillon has been awarded three ribbons for her quilt entered in the 2017 Swamp Fox Quilters Guild Challenge, “Granny’s Block Today.”
Her quilt, entitled “Stop and Go–Around the Neighborhood,” is a large quilt constructed using Traditional Log Cabin blocks and Courthouse Steps blocks to create a picture quilt, a modern twist on the usual, traditional Log Cabin variations. There are over 7,000 one-inch “logs” in the 600 little blocks that make up the quilt.
The quilt was recognized with 2nd place ribbons for Best Use of Theme, Best Art Quilt, and Best Piecing.
The quilt features a neighborhood scene with a house, cars and trucks on a street, trees, grass, and a pond all shaped with four-inch Log Cabin blocks, A cat and a dog, flowers, and ducks swimming in the pond are appliquéd into the scene. She added a Clemson Tiger paw on the camper. There is a stoplight included on the street corner. One cute feature is a miniature stoplight Ms. Arnette made to hold the quilt’s title and information card.
Other awardees include: Jonnie Britton, of Florence, received Best of Show and two 1st place ribbons for Best Use of Theme, and Best Piecingfor her quilt entitled, “Wild and Goosey,” featuring paper-pieced Wild Geese Flying blocks; Harriet Whitlock, of Hartsville, received two 1st place ribbons for Best Appliqué and Best Machine Quilting for her quilt entitled, “BFF’s–Not My Grandma’s Sunbonnet Sue,” and a 2nd place prize for Best Machine Quilting, for a second entry, “Not Your Grandmother’s Flower Garden.” Janice Davis, of Florence, won 2nd place ribbons for Best Appliqué and Best Art Quilt for her quilt, “A Wind Day.” Rita Stoddard, of Hartsville, won a 2nd place ribbon for Best Piecing for her entry, “Stained Glass Roses.”
First place for Best Art Quilt went to Peggy O’Quinn, of Timmonsville, for her embroidered and beaded wall quilt named “Peggy Sue” after the Buddy Holly hit of the same name. Pat Couch and Elaine Holmes, both of Florence, were recognized with 1st and 2nd place ribbons, respectively, for Best Hand Quilting.
First time entrants, Brenda Gregg, Linda Smiley, and Suzie Walker, all of Florence, and Susie Moody, of Quinby, were recognized for their first time entries in a quilt exhibit. Brenda Gregg was awarded the “Quilters of South Carolina” ribbon.
Additional members with quilts included in the show are Judy Voss, Nancy Wright, Rosemary Carroll, Beth Twedell, Susan Rayment, Sara Lee Simons, all of Florence, also Rita Brooks Tompkins, Joan Goodsell, all of Darlington and Timi Bronson, Frances Kelly, both of Hartsville, Harry Sue Cockfield, of Wedgefield, and Wanda Moody, of Quinby.
This is the Seventeenth Annual Quilt Challenge with the theme “Grandma’s Block Today.”
Swamp Fox Quilters Guild members were required to use traditional block with a modern twist.
Mrs. Arnette said, “I am sure Grandma made many wonderful quilts using the traditional Log Cabin Block pattern, with its many interesting and beautiful variations, but I am pretty sure she never made a ‘scenic picture’ quilt.”
The quilts are on exhibit at the Hartsville Museum, 222 North Fifth Street, in Hartsville.
The free exhibit will continue throughout the summer, until Labor Day. Museum hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Visitors to the exhibit will have the opportunity to vote on their favorite quilt with the winner to be given “The People’s Choice Award.”
