Local Florist Corey Jackson Discusses Design With Glove And Trowel Garden Club

The Glove and Trowel Garden Club met on Wednesday, May 10, 2017, at 3:00 p.m. at the home of Jeanne McLaurin with 19 members present.
Our newly elected President, Molly Pittman, called the meeting to order, welcomed everyone, thanked Jeanne for being our hostess, and recognized members with May birthdays: Elizabeth Jordan (May 3), Julie LeChette (May 4), and Lydia Carr (May 27).
After leading us in the reading of our Garden Club Collect, she turned the meeting over to our Program Chairman, Ditto Jenkins, who introduced our guest speaker, Corey Jackson, with Jackson & Strickland Floral Designs. Corey’s topic was “Modern Floral Design.”
He brought flowers and fillers to show us some of the techniques of modern day floral design.
He gave the name of each flower stem he was using as well as the greenery for fillers, and passed them around the room for each of us to see before placing them in a tall crystal vase with a fluted top which he used for preparing his one-sided arrangement with them.
Start working with the tallest stems/flowers and as you add them make each one a little shorter.
Stems were cut at a slant, and at different heights, and water used in the vase was room temperature.
Water in an arrangement needs to be changed (dumped out) every day and filled back up. A little clorox or baby aspirin can be added to the water for freshness.
Some of the flowers were: Bells of Ireland, Larkspur, Star Gazer Lily, Roses, Babies Breath, Heather, Seeded Eucalyptus, and Hydrangea. He does not use bows in his arrangements, but places a really pretty flower at the bottom center instead, such as a pretty Hydrangea! He also told us about a new Lime Light Hydrangea.
Everyone enjoyed his program, and we all learned a lot about arranging fresh flowers! This met our NGC Objective: Floral Design.
Minutes of the April Meeting were approved, a Treasurer’s Report was given by Julie LeChette, and cards were sent by our Cheer Chairman, Marilyn Zunk. New project and program ideas were discussed, and a sheet was passed around for members to sign up for Hostesses and Program Chairmen for the coming year. Amy McColl will place an arrangement in Dunbar Library in recognition of National Garden Club Week June 4 – 10.
Our 2016 Publicity Press Book prepared by Fay Sloan under the Presidency of Julie Sawyer won Honorable Mention at the GCSC State Convention held in Greenville, S.C. on April 27 – 29, 2017. The Certificate and Book were passed around for everyone to see. A picture will be placed in The Dillon Herald.
Julie LeChette, on behalf of the Garden Club, presented Julie Sawyer a flower pot of Violets, our Garden Club Flower, in appreciation of her service as our President the past two years.
Other dates to remember are: May 16 – 21: NGC Convention, Richmond, VA.; June 18-24: Camp Wildwood; and July 15: Expo in Columbia.
The meeting was then adjourned by our President, Molly Pittman.
We are members of the National Garden Clubs, Inc., the South Atlantic Region, the Garden Club of South Carolina, and the Coastal District.
