The Main Street Methodist Men held the annual Red Cross Golf tournament fundraiser on Friday, April 21, at the City of Dillon Municipal Golf Course to raise funds for the Red Cross. The event raised over $20.000.00 which will remain in Dillon County to assist in disaster relief here. Every dollar collected here stays here.
After the recent Matthew storm, everyone is aware of the tragedies that a storm of that nature causes. We were unable to travel from Dillon to Latta, Dillon to Lake View, etc. There were over 200 people housed in the Dillon High School shelter alone during Matthew during the time of which we had 46 roads closed in Dillon County alone.
Richard Schafer, local Red Cross volunteer, thanked everyone for this event
Schafer remarked “Matthew taught us (the Red Cross, our community, and others) a lot. We also learned a lot from the flood a year ago.” One will always see our Red Cross present at each fire, storm, or whatever.
This event is spearheaded by Ronnie “Catfish” Carter and Dr. Phil Wallace.
There was much fellowship, fun, and food before the start of the tournament.
Rev. Bruce Sayre blessed the tournament and the food.
Hamburgers and hot dogs were prepared by Tommy Berry, Norman Norton, Jakie Lewis, and B.P. Gordon, members of Main Street United Methodist Men.
There were probably at least 80 golfers who participated in this event with 14 “Gold” sponsors and other sponsors who also contributed to make this one of the most successful events for the Red Cross fundraising. Each year the event grows.
