Maxine Dunlap McIntyre

CLIO—Maxine Dunlap McIntyre, age 98,  died on December 17, 2016 after 5 months of declining health at The Methodist Manor Retirement Home in Florence, SC. 
Maxine was born June 3, 1918, in Little Rock (Dillon County) South Carolina. Maxine was the consummate southern lady.  She always took a personal interest in everyone she met: her children’s friends, her family and everyone she worked with. Her life was filled with friendships far and wide.
A Memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 20th at 11 a.m. at the Methodist Manor Chapel in Florence, SC.  Officiating will be Chaplain Ann Ayres.
On Wednesday, December 21st, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Clio, SC, the family will receive friends from 1 – 2 p.m. in the church parsonage, followed by her funeral service in the main sanctuary at 2 p.m. Officiating are the Reverend Emily Davis, Reverend William F. Malambri, III and Reverend Paul Gasque.  Burial will follow at Hebron Cemetery.
She was the only child of the late DeEtte Tally and Percy Gray Dunlap. Maxine was the widow of the late Dewitte Hamer McIntyre. They were married for 53 years. Their wedding ceremony took place in Long Beach, California during the only West Coast black out during World War II.
She was educated in Little Rock and Dillon County Schools and finished high school at Fassifern School for Girls in Hendersonville, NC, where she was chosen as May Queen.
In 1939, Maxine graduated from Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia.  In 1941, she earned her BRE in Religious Education from the Presbyterian School of Christian Education (Union Theological Seminary) in Richmond, Virginia.
She served as the Director of Christian Education for the Lexington Presbyterian Church in Lexington, VA. After the war, Maxine and Hamer settled in Clio, SC. She served as Kindergarten Director at the Methodist Church in Laurinburg, NC and then taught in Dillon, SC. During the last 16 years of her career, she taught first grade at Blenheim Elementary School in Marlboro County.
Maxine was always active in her church and in her community. She was elected to the Clio Town Council, and she served on the Marlboro County Library Board, Trustee Board of Clio Schools, Historical Society and Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.
She was always involved with her church, Trinity United Methodist Church in Clio, SC.  She taught Sunday School and also worked with the youth. She was president of the United Methodist Church Woman, a member of the choir, and a member of the Administrative board, serving as secretary. She later taught the adult Sunday School in the Eula Roper McCall Class at Trinity.
Eight and a half years ago, Maxine moved to the Methodist Manor Retirement Home in Florence, SC. At the manor, she enjoyed reconnecting with old friends and making many new friends.
She is survived by three children, Dewitte Gray McIntyre and his wife Janie London McIntyre of Charlotte NC, Bernette Langley (Bryant Langley) of Clio, SC and Melinda Wilfong and husband Charles Wilfong of Florence, SC, three granddaughters, Chandler McIntyre and her husband Taylor Short of Charlotte, NC, Jane McIntyre Barghothi and her husband AJ Barghothi of Athens, GA, and Sally Gray McIntyre Malambri and her husband, Will Malambri of Florence, SC. She was also preceded in death by her husband Dewitte Hamer McIntyre, her son in law Bryant Langley and her first cousins, Buddy “Ike” Dunlap and Sally Dunlap Elliott.
She is also survived by five great grandchildren, Mac Malambri, Annagray Malambri, Bliss Short, Hart Short and Dewitte Short.
Maxine also leaves behind her Emerson cousins, in addition to her McIntyre and Hamer families, to whom she was devoted.
Maxine remained very proud of the Bruce Welge Scholarship and Citizenship Award she helped establish. It is presented each year at Trinity Methodist Church.
She was also proud of the Dunlap McIntyre Scholarship for continuing education. Both of these scholarship funds reflect her love of education and learning.
Gratitude and thanks to the staff of the Methodist Manor, the staff of McLeod Hospice and Tangie’s Angels, which enriched her life and the lives of her family members, through their love and remarkable care.
