Leon Benford “Ben” Herring

Leon Benford “Ben” Herring, 85, of Spartanburg, SC, died Saturday, September 24, 2016 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born March 7, 1931, in Dillon, SC, he was the son of the late Sammie Buster and Ada Wilkerson Herring.
Mr. Herring was the Valedictorian of his class at Dillon, SC High School, earned his Masters in Ceramic Engineering at Clemson University. He was retired from the U.S. Army as 2nd Lieutenant. As a member of Cedar Springs Baptist Church, he was also a member of the church choir, Sunday School teacher, and Deacon. He was also a Mason, Exalted Ruler of the Elks Club and a member of Gideon’s International.
Survivors include his wife, Betty W. Herring; son, Dr. L. Derek Herring (Vicki) of Pauline, SC; granddaughters, Christy H. Marshall (Jerrod) of Saluda, SC, Hilary Pitts of Charlotte, NC, and Hannah Herring of Pauline, SC; grandsons, Jay Haggard (Misty) of Pauline, SC, Erik Pitts (Kelly) of Spartanburg, SC, and Jake Herring of Pauline, SC; six great grandchildren; one niece and four nephews. Along with his parents, he was also predeceased by a son, Daryl Herring and a daughter, Lynn Haggard.
A memorial service will be conducted at 4:00 PM, Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307, by the Rev. Dr. Todd Lowe. Visitation will follow in the Chapel. Burial service will be privately held at a later date.
Honorary escorts will be The Gideons International South Camp and The Joe Webb Sunday School Class.
