The Dillon County Historical Society was organized in 1961 with 250 charter members. This year, 2016, the Society celebrates its 55th anniversary. Congratulations!
General John C. Henegan, elected the first president, was instrumental in saving the home of James W. Dillon, founding father of Dillon County. The house, originally located at the corner of First Avenue and Washington Street, was moved to its present location and converted into a museum and became “The J.W. Dillon House Musuem.”
In 1996 the Society began restoration of the 1915 doctor-dentist office of Dr. Luther Edwards in Latta. The Dillon County Museum offers a glimpse of early life in Dillon County through exhibits, historic documents, photographs, and other memorabilia. As an added attraction, a restored red Caboose which houses a number of railroad artifacts is located on the property.
Both the J.W. Dillon House and the Dillon County Museum are on the National Register of Historic Places.
A “Hall of History” is located on the fourth floor of the beautifully restored Dillon County Courthouse. Interesting photographs of people, places and events from Dillon County’s history line the wall.
