The Dillon Christian School Warriors defeated the Robert E. LEE Cavaliers 35-20 in some hard-hitting action Thursday night at Warrior Field.
The Cavaliers were favored but the Warriors take offense to being under dogged to any team.
All area teams rescheduled their games to Thursday due to the approaching tropical storm that would hit Friday night.
The first quarter would end with no score with the Warrior defense stopping two drives in the red zone by the Cavaliers.
The Warriors did reach the ten yard line on a long run but fumbled with the Cavaliers recovering.
In the second quarters the Cavaliers would find the end zone first with tailback Hunter McGee crossing the goal line from two yards out. Jet Smith kicked the point after to put the Cavaliers up 7-0 with 8:47 left in the second quarter.
On the Warriors final offensive drive of the second quarter Michael Minges went 14 yards on a quarterback keeper for the touchdown. Gage Bazemore’s point after kick evened the game at 7-7 with 2:50 left in the quarter with the first half ending with this score.
The slug out continued in the third quarter with some players going down with injuries but thankfully they were able to return to the field later in the game.
Minges picked up his second touchdown of the game on a busted play breaking six tackles on his way to a 35 yard touchdown run. Bazemore’s point after put the Warriors gave the Warriors a 14-7 lead with 7:17 left in the third quarter. Cavalier deep back Nick Laney took the kickoff and took it all the way back for an 83 yard touchdown. Smith’s point after kick evened the score at 14-14 with 7:03 left in the third quarter.
With 2:41 left in the third quarter, Diaz Alexander showed the Cavalier defenders his great speed as he raced 19 yards to the end zone for a touchdown. Bazemore booted the point after to get the Warriors back on top 21-14. The third quarter would end with this score.
On their next offensive possession, The Cavaliers took advantage of a tired Warrior defense and mounted a drive that ended with quarterback Bryce Barrett hitting McGee with a four yard touchdown strike.
The Cavaliers went for the two point conversion but the Warrior defense was ready and made the stop to hold a 21-20 Warrior lead with 11:38 left in the game. Midway in the fourth quarter the Warriors mounted a drive that ended with Minges finding tight end Luke Price for a 16 yard touchdown pass. Bazemore’s gave the Warriors an eight point lead 28-20 with 6:12 left in the game. On the Cavaliers next drive Warrior linebacker, Luke Price laid a solid hit on a Cavalier running back the sent the ball to the ground with Minges picking up the loose ball and racing 61 yards to the end zone for the touchdown. Bazemore added the final point of the game to give the Warriors the 35-20 lead and win.  The Warriors are 3-0 on the season and the Cavaliers drop to 1-2 with the loss.
On offense for the Warriors, Michael Minges was 11 of 15 passing for 125 yards and a touchdown adding 132 yards on 14 carries with two touchdowns. Diaz Alexander had 147 yards on 15 carries and caught a pass for two yards, Jackson Wolfe caught three passes for 44 yards with one being a high leap in the air off balance catching the ball with his fingertips.
Luke Price caught two passes for 39 yards and a touchdown, Tyreke Toomer caught two passes for 22 yards and 12 yards on two carries, Bryan Davis caught a pass for nine yards and Gage Bazemore was a perfect 5 for 5 in extra point kicks.
On defense, Luke Price had 16 tackles, six assists, Michael Minges had seven tackles two assists with a fumble recovered and returned 61 yards for a touchdown,
The combined efforts of Price and Minges on that play could have been considered a top five play of the week also, Walt Bailey, Jared Darmon, Jared Ivey, Hamilton Hodges and Diaz Alexander getting three tackles with three assists each with Alexander intercepting a pass in the end zone. Samuel Coleman, Bryan Davis, Tyreke Toomer and Barnes Causey had two tackles two assists each, Jackson Wolke, Evan Paul and Mathew Fitzgibbon added a tackle  with three assists each and Corbin Wethington added a tackle and an assist.
The Warriors have another long road trip Friday as they travel to Greenwood for a game with Greenwood Christian School with game time set for 7:30.
