The Dillon Christian School Warriors defeated a very strong Trinity/Byrnes School Titans team Friday night in Dillon at Warrior Field. The Titans had a size advantage over the Warriors but the Warriors were the masters of speed. Michael Minges, Diaz Alexander and Jackson Wolfe led the Warrior offense while Luke Price Samuel Coleman and Garret Collins led a determined Warrior defense. The Warriors also got some good play from their special teams. Most of the first quarter was a defensive struggle until Diaz Alexander returned a punt 44 yards for a touchdown with 2:56 left in the quarter. Gage Bazemore’s point after kick put the Warriors up 7-0. Following the Warrior kick the Titans were pinned inside their own 20 yard line. Titan quarterback Mateo Thompson sent a pass to his end but Luke Price stepped over for the interception and returned it 26 yards for a touchdown. The conversion failed holding the Warrior lead to 13-0 with 1:38 left in the first quarter with the quarter ending with this score. The second quarter was a hard hitting defensive battle with the first half of play ending with the Warriors holding the 13-0 lead.
On their first offensive possession of the third quarter Warrior quarterback Michael Minges hit wide receiver Jackson Wolfe with a 65-yard touchdown pass. Bazemore’s point after kick put the Warriors up 20-0 with 10:46 left in the third quarter. The remainder of the third quarter would belong to the Titans offense.  Mateo Thompson crossed the goal line from one yard out for the Titans first touchdown. The point after kick was blocked but the Warrior lead was cut to 20-6 with 6:31 left in the third quarter. On the Titans next offensive possession, Thomson broke some tackles for a 21-yard touchdown run. Eddie Buckhouse kicked the point after to close the Warrior lead to 20-13 with 4:41 left in the third quarter with the quarter closing with this score.
During the second half of play the Warriors had three long runs with one being a touchdown called back due to a penalty. The long gains were not aided by the penalties which caused some frustration to the coaches. These are high school players and are going to make mistakes. If they will listen to the coaches and stay focused the mistakes will lessen. The legendary NFL coach John Madden said that an aggressive player will draw penalties but help to win games. It is the unnecessary penalties that drive coaches crazy. The Warrior defense did stand tall to stop the Titans from scoring and possibly taking the lead in the fourth quarter stopping two drives in the red zone. With 3:25 left in the game, Minges crossed the goal line on a five yard quarterback keeper. Gage Bazemore added the final point of the game with his extra point kick giving the Warriors a 27-13 lead and win.
Warrior defensive coach, Phillip Price, said that the defense came through when they needed it. “The Titans were a better team than we had expected with some big lineman and a very good backfield.” Price added that the Warrior defense will continue to improve with each game.
Warrior Head Coach Christian Wolfe stated that he was proud of his team’s effort in this game and thanked the coaching staff for all of their help. “We got some big plays on offense and special teams and our defense held a very good team to 13 points,” added Wolfe. “We have to prepare for another good team next week as last year’s state champions Robert E. Lee will be here,” stated Wolfe.
On offense for the Warriors, Michael Minges was 9 of 16 passing for 166 yards and a touchdown and had 41 yards rushing on 10 carries with a touchdown, Diaz Alexander had 42 yards on 10 carries and caught five passes for 70 yards, Alexander added 126 yards in kick returns with a 44-yard punt returned for a touchdown. Alexander had about 90 yards cancelled due to penalties. Jackson Wolfe caught three passes for 79 yards with one going 65 yards for a touchdown. Garret Collins had 11 yards on two carries and caught a pass for 17 yards, Tyreke Toomer added two yards on a carry and Gage Bazemore was 3 of 4 in point after kicks.
