Annual Farm-City Banquet Held

After a morning tour, participants returned to the City of Dillon Wellness Center where they enjoyed a hot dog luncheon and awards were presented.

Farm Service Agency Wes Daniels delivered remarks. (His speech can be seen on www.thedillonherald.com.)
After his remarks, several awards were presented.
Outstanding student awards went to:
—The Outstanding Student for Farm City Week from Dillon Christian School is Carlton Jesse Miller. Jesse is the son of Michael and Deborah Miller of Hamer, and is a senior at Dillon Christian School. He has participated in football and baseball at DCS. Jesse is a member of the Senior Beta Club and has served as Class Chaplain and Student Council Class Representative at Dillon Christian School. He has worked with Miller Farms during the summer for the past five years. He is a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church in Lake View and is very involved in activities there. Jesse hopes to attend Clemson University in the fall and major in Agri-Business.
—Patrick Rowe, a Dillon Technology Center Automotive student and a senior at Dillon High School, is the nominee from the Dillon Technology CentHe is an intern and is a coop student employed by Five Star Mercedes Benz of Florence, SC. His accomplishments in the automotive program have earned him ASE Student Certified Master Technician.
Patrick is extremely competent in completing deadline assignments, as well as, his work ethics being beyond my expectations, in that, he attends Atech during his off class time from Dillon High School to help me in preparing the shop area for each class period. He is always ready to help other students when they are not understanding job procedures. His attendance, his attitude, and his respect for his peers, administration, and for me as his instructor, are very exceptional. Patrick is the type of student who wants the best and taking criticism is the way that makes him better and more determined to get where he needs to be in his field. His grade average for the automotive department is a 99 giving more than 100 percent in class and in the shop area. Patrick plans to pursue Mercedes Benz training through Lincoln Technical College in Nashville, Tennessee, and plans to graduate with an associate degree in the automotive field. —Dillon High School would like to nominate Mr. Aaron Bristow as the Outstanding Student for Dillon County Farm-City Week 2015.
Aaron has indicated during his conferences with counselors and coaches that he is considering a career in farming. His interest stems from time spent with his grandfather working on his farm. Aaron now enjoys working with his grandfather in planting seasonal gardens to include watermelons in the summer and pumpkins in the fall.
Aaron is a hardworking and trustworthy student. His friendly smile and quiet demeanor are welcome by all of his teachers.
—William Christian Scott has been chosen as our Farm City Outstanding Student. He is a senior at Lake View High School. He has taken the following agricultural classes at our school: Ornamental Horticulture, Environmental & Natural Resources, Nursery & Garden Technology, Ag & Environmental Science, and Wildlife Management. Additionally, he has earned the Greenhand Degree, Chapter FFA Degree, and State FFA Degree. He has participated in many FFA Career Development Events including Tractor Driving CDE, Land Judging CDE, and Tool Identification CDE. He has held leadership roles like FFA Sentinel, FFA President, and Senior Class Officer. Christian has attended two FFA Workshops, the Potential Officer Workshop and the Chapter Officer Workshop. Along with FFA Christian has participated in Baseball, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and the Leo Club.
—The“Outstanding Student for Latta High School for Farm City Week is Ana Tindall, daughter of Mrs. Kelly Monahan Sturgeon. Ana has been involved in the Latta High School Chapter of the Future Farmers of America since the ninth grade. She has played a key role in helping with our local chapter projects. She recently helped serve as a waitress at the Seba and Lou Stoudenmire Scholarship fundraiser event. The Seba Stoudenmire Scholarship is awarded annually to one of our agriculture students. Ana was eager to help with the fundraiser, and she certainly helped to make the event a success. Ana is certainly a key member of the Latta High School Chapter of the Future Farmers of America.
During Ana’s high school career, she has also been a member of the Academic Challenge Team, the Varsity Volleyball Team, the Varsity Track Team, The national Honor Society, and the National Technical Honor Society. In addition, she is a member of the Interact Club, which is a service organization that is affiliated with our local Rotary Club. This organization helps to provide clothing items for needy families in the Latta community. Ana has also been on mission trips with her church. She enjoys helping others. Because of her performance at the Dillon County Applied Technology Center, she is the team leader for the Welding Rodeo Team. She is an amazing young person.
The Business Person of the Year went to Ivy Pope of Pope’s Furniture. Pope Furniture, Inc. has been operated by the same family for over sixty years. In 1950 the late Turk Pope, the father of Bob Pope (owner) and grandfather of Ivy Pope. started a furniture business at 315 E. Main Street in Dillon, SC. Their furniture store was owned and operated by Turk and his wife, Louise, until their death. The store was then run by Turk’s sons until 1975 when the younger son, Bob Pope, bought out the other son and he solely ??? store. In 1989, Bob’s daughter, Ivy, graduated from college and returned to Dillon to run the store; she presently manages the family furniture store.
The Farmer of the Year went to a friend of farming Bill Aston and ArborOne. Bill has been a relationship manager with ArborOne for 35 years. He grew up in Latta and was awarded the Glen Krohn Award for Volunteerism from Clemson Extension. He started the 4-H shooting program about 15 years ago.
