Yellow Jessamine Garden Club Welcomes New Members

The Yellow Jessamine Garden Club met Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. Our hostess, Mildred Mishue, welcomed us in her beautifully decorated home. Cathy McDaniel, President, opened the meeting with prayer. Our hearts were heavy with the news of the death of Mary Ricks’ son, Wayne. The members expressed our love and prayers for Mary during this time of grief.
Cathy welcomed our new members, Glenda Campbell Melissa Moody, Judy Powell, and Cathorine Price to our garden club.
Our hostess then served a delicious meal, which we all enjoyed. After the meal, Cathy introduced our guest speaker, Marleen Lane, Owner/Operator of “Design by Marleen-N-More.” Marleen showed us how to make holiday arrangements from discarded old artificial wreaths and trees, and other decorations that we may have. She also stated that any container you may have could be used in making an arrangement. In her presentation, she used wire cutters to cut off branches and then inserted them in a container using candles, inexpensive decorations, and finishing with a bow. She also showed us how to make bows, which was a big hit for everyone. Live greenery is another way to decorate inexpensively. Marleen has opened another store in Latta, “Flowers in the Attic.” Her store in Dillon, “Design by Marleen-N-More” is located on Main Street behind the Dillon Chamber of Commerce building.
The business meeting was then held with Cathy welcoming back Shirley Gundry after an illness. The new members were introduced to everyone and, again welcomed to our club. The secretary, Mildred Mishue, began by asking for the roll call with members responding with their favorite holiday evergreen. The minutes were then read and approved. In the absence of our Treasurer, Cathy gave the Treasurer’s report. A thank you card was then read from Diana Haimerl, Coastal District Director. Cathy presented a picture of “Diana’s Quilt.” Diana won second prize for the quilt at the State Fair. It was very beautiful. Congratulations to Diana! The committees then reported: Frances Tyler, Birds, reported on the Wren. The Wren is a small bird that builds nest in tin cans and you may find nests in your hanging baskets and flowers on your porch. Larue Bracey, Chairman of Projects and Litter called for a cleanup day for Tuesday, November 18, at 9:00 a.m. at the #9 Roadside Park.

The Christmas Social was set for Monday, December 1 at Kings in Dillon at 6:30 p.m. Cathy gave a progress report on Arbor Day.
She reminded everyone that the celebration will be at the Dillon House Museum on Friday, December 5, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. We have a good program lined up with great speakers.
Cathorine Price won the door prize. The Floral Design by our hostess was “Holiday Surprise” consisting of a beautiful arrangement of periwinkle and camellias.
