Wildcats Hold Off Marlboro, Fall to South Robeson

The Dillon Wildcats held off Marlboro County on Monday night but fell to South Robeson on Tuesday in boys varsity basketball action.

The Wildcats were on the road in Bennettsville on Monday to take on the Bullodgs and earned a 65-61 win.

Marlboro took a narrow 12-11 lead in the first quarter, but the Wildcats rallied in the second to outscore the Bulldogs 27-10 for a 38-22 lead at the half. But Marlboro wouldn’t be denied, outscoring Dillon 23-11 in the third to close the gap to 49-45. The Wildcats and Bulldogs battled to a draw in the fourth, both teams adding 16 points to allow the Wildcats to preserve the win at 65-61.

Dillon’s JaQuan Knowlin and Eri’Reon Hayes each added 20 points to lead the Wildcats in the win. Raheem McClam added 13 points; Lawrence Crouch, 5; Que Bethea, 4; and Omar McCollum, 3.

Marlboro was led by Demetrius Knox with a team-high 16 points as he made his debut this season. Fred Brown added 12 points; K. Johnson, 11; Alonte Littles, 9; Green, 6; Ronald Henegan, 2; Reggie McLeod, 2; Cameron Johnson, 2; and Covington, 1.

On Tuesday, the Wildcats faced another tough fight with the South Robeson Mustangs, falling 67-64 in the final quarter.

Dillon took a 16-14 lead in the first, but South Robeson rallied for a 14-8 second quarter to lead 28-24 at the half. Dillon pulled ahead 44-41 heading into the fourth behind a 20-13 third quarter, but the Mustangs battled the Wildcats for a 26-20 fourth quarter to claim the win.

Dillon was led by Joe Manning with 18 points and Raheem McClam and Lawrence Crouch each added 14. Que Bethea added seven; Avery McCall, 4; Omar McCollum, 3; Eri’Reon Hayes, 2; and JaQuan Knowlin, 2.

South Robeson’s D. Banks scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Mustangs. D. Worley added 14; Fotclear, 10; Miller, 5; McCallom, 5; B. Hunt, 3; Strickland, 2; and Hutt, 2.

The Wildcats slipped to 2-1 overall with the loss.

Dillon will be at home on Monday and Tuesday night to host Lake View and Marlboro County. Varsity action begins at 6:00 p.m., so make plans to attend to support our local teams!
