Former Wildcat Smith to Play for Stingers

Former Wildcat Kwinton Smith will be playing baseball for Florence-Darlington Tech this season.

Smith was a 14th round 2012 MLB draft pick for the Texas Rangers but declined their offer to play football at the University of South Carolina. He was a redshirt in his freshman year with the Gamecocks but appeared in 11 games in his sophomore season. In March he announced that he would transfer after he was academically ineligible to play in the Capital One Bowl.

In his senior year with the Wildcats, Smith had .438 average with four home runs and 13 RBI. He pitched 22 innings as a senior for 35 outs and a 1.27 ERA.

As a football player, Smith had 75 catches for 1,373 yards and 25 touchdowns in his last two seasons as a Wildcat. He was a Shrine Bowl pick and was ranked the sixth best prospect in the state, and also appearing the Offense-Defense All-American game. In his college career, he had five catches for 42 yards in 11 games.

Smith considered James Madison and Coastal Carolina as options after he left USC, but did not commit to either school.

Smith will likely play an outfielder or pitcher for the Florence-Darlington Stingers. The Stingers finished second in their region last season.
