Lady Wildcats Battle Warriors for 3-2 Region Win

Dillon’s Lady Wildcats took an early lead against Waccamaw on Tuesday night and held off a late rally from the Warriors for a 3-2 win in Region 8-2A action.

The Wildcats, ranked at the top of the Class 2A softball polls, took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and picked up another run in the third. Waccamaw, ranked fourth in the state, got their first run in the top of the fifth to trail 2-1. Dillon answered with another run in the bottom of the inning, and kept the Warriors to one run in the top of the sixth to retain the 3-2 win.

Shaquailla German earned the win on the mound, pitching a complete game for four hits, two runs, one earned run, seven walks, and seven outs. German improved to 4-2 on the mound this season with the win.

McKenzie Lugin took the loss for Waccamaw, pitching six innings for six hits, three earned runs, and two outs.

Shayna Covington lead the Lady Wildcats at bat, going 3-for-3 with two stolen bases. Covington scored all three runs in Dillon’s win.

Rebecca Callahan went 1-for-3 with a double; Taylor Price and Shar’Asia Samuel each went 1-for-3; Erin Bailey picked up two RBI; Tara Grimsley and Shaquailla German each picked up a RBI; and Tori Grimsley stole a base.

Emily Heimberger led the Lady Warriors at bat, going 2-for-4. Waccamaw had a total of four hits in the effort.

In the field, Leah McMillan made nine put outs with one assist; Rebecca Callahan made two put outs, two assists; Shayna Covington made two put outs, three assists; Erin Bailey made one put out with one assist; Taylor Price made three assists; and Shaquailla German made two assists.

Dillon improved to 8-2 overall and remained undefeated at 5-0 in Region 8-2A.

The Lady Wildcats are set to host Class 4A’s Carolina Forest tonight at 6:00 p.m. and will be away at Marion on Friday at 6:30.

The Wildcats will be back at home on Monday, April 7, to host Lake View’s Lady Wild Gators in a double header beginning at 5:30 p.m. Make plans to attend to support our local teams!
