Latta Vikings Defeat Trojans in Unsettled Region 8-A Basketball

The Latta Vikings boys and girls basketball teams picked up wins over Green Sea-Floyds at home on Tuesday night as they worked to make up missed games and settle Region 8-A.

The Vikings had three region games to make up this week, prompting back-to-back home games against Lake View, Green Sea-Floyds, and Johnsonville.

In Tuesday’s girls’ game, Latta took a 21-7 lead in the first quarter and went 23-8 in the second for a 44-15 lead at the half. The Lady Vikings shut out the Trojans in the second half 29-0 to seal a 73-15 win.

Brittany Burgess led the Lady Vikings with a game-high 20 points and Jessica Evans added 19 in the win. TaKeria Legette earned 13; Mallory Townsend scored six; and Margaret Desser added four, with Maya Wright, Tyjhane Faison, Iyonna McKenzie, Madelia Johnson, and Iyranna Keene each adding two points. Michia Johnson also contributed one point in the win.

Green Sea-Floyds was led by Tamara Jackson with six points, with Q. Gaillard earning five points and Page McDaniels scoring four in the effort.

With the win, Latta improved to 13-4 overall and 8-1 in Region 8-A.

In boys action, the Vikings took a 24-14 lead in the first quarter and went 21-12 in the second to lead 45-26 at the half. Latta widened the lead with a 22-8 third quarter and went 12-10 in the fourth to seal the 79-44 win.

Kartilus McFadden earned a game-high 15 points for Latta and Diez Mungro added 12 with R.J. McClam scoring 11. Tyrell Sabb scored seven points and Jordan Simms, Darren Pernell, Quane Williams, C.J. Mace, and Donell Stanley each earned six points in the win. Eric McGirt also added four points for the Vikings.

Green Sea-Floyds was led by J. Gerald and S. Jordan with 10 points each and R. Bellamy with nine. C. Miles added 5; C. Durant, 44; S. Williams, 3; M. Brown, 2; an M. Upchurch earned one point in the effort.

Latta improved to 8-7 with the win and 7-2 in Region 8-A.

The Latta teams were scheduled to host Johnsonville on Wednesday night to determine the Region 8-A rankings.

In the girls Class A playoffs, the Region 8-A champ will host East Clarendon at 6:00 p.m. tonight, while second place will host Hemingway. Region 8’s third place finisher will travel to Carvers Bay, and the fourth place finisher will face the Region 7-A champ Timmonsville.

In the boys Class A playoffs, the Region 8-A champ will host Carvers Bay and second place will host C.E. Murray. The third place finisher will travel to Timmonsville and fourth place will travel to Hemingway.
