The Latta Vikings defeated Johnsonville 59-54 on Wednesday to hand the Flashes their only region loss of the season and secure second place in Region 8-A boys basketball
Johnsonville pulled ahead 14-7 in the first quarter and led 27-20 at the half, but Latta caught up with a 13-8 third quarter to trail 35-33. The Vikings rallied in the fourth to outscore the Flashes 26-19 and secure the win.
Tyrell Sabb led the Vikings with 13 points and Diez Mungro added 12 with R.J. McClam and Donell Stanley both earning nine points and Kartilus McFadden and Jordan Sims each earning eight.
Johnsonville’s Tushai Edwards scored 17 points; Josh Franklin, 11; Eaddy, 7; Morris, 7; Crouch, 6; Williams, 4; and Ripley, 2.
Latta improved to 10-6 overall and 8-2 in the region, while Johnsonville slipped to 15-7 and 9-1.
GIRLS
Meanwhile, Latta’s Lady Vikings defeated Johnsonville 55-27 to secure the Region 8-A girls’ title.
Latta took an 18-3 lead in the first quarter and stayed well ahead throughout the game, leading 26-9 at the half and outscoring the Flashes 29-18 in the second half.
Jessica Evans led Latta with 21 points and TaKeria Legette added 11 in the win. Brittany Burgess scored eight; Iyonna McKenzie earned six; Mallory Townsend earned four; Maya Wright added three; and Margaret Desser contributed two points for the Vikings.
Gunter led Johnsonville with 10 points; Williams, 8; Ard, 6; Graham, 2; and Coles, 1.
Latta improved to 14-4 and 9-1 in Region 8-A as they claimed the title.
