UPDATED: Wildcats Earn Wins in Shootout, Lady Wildcats Claim Championship

The Dillon Wildcats defeated Purnell Swett 97-89 in the first round of the Robeson County Shootout on Wednesday, December 18.

The Wildcats battled into double overtime before securing the win to advance in the tournament.

Kendrick Purdie Purnell Swett with a team-high 24 points and Tyler Maynor added 21.

Also in the first round, Fairmont defeated Red Springs 99-59; Richmond defeated St. Pauls 83-44; and Lumberton defeated South Robeson 80-32.

On Thursday night, St. Pauls was scheduled to be at Red Springs and Purnell Swett was scheduled to be at South Robeson in the consolation bracket games.

Dillon advanced to the semi-finals, which were scheduled to be played on Friday, December 20. The Wildcats were scheduled to face Lumberton while Richmond was scheduled to be at Fairmont.

Placing and championship games were scheduled for Saturday, December 21. Due to early holiday deadlines, look for updates from the tournament online at thedillonherald.com and in next week’s issues of THE DILLON HERALD.

GIRLS

Dillon’s Lady Wildcats earned a 62-32 win over Purnell Swett in the opening round of girls basketball action in the Robeson County Shootout.

Dillon took a 13-5 lead in the first quarter and went 20-8 in the second to lead 33-13 at the half. The Wildcats outscored Purnell Swett 19-6 in the third to widen the lead. Purnell Swett outpaced Dillon 13-10 in the fourth but it wasn’t enough to close the gap.

Tyshanna Lester led Dillon with 19 points and Brianna Lee added 11 in the win. Callie McRae scored six, and Da’Kerhia Samuel, Nakedra Page, Yolanda Campbell, and Khamele Manning each added five points. Shar’asia Samuel, Jelissa Fentzlaff, and Kendra McLeod each scored two in the win. Samuel also picked up 13 rebounds and Manning grabbed 12.

Also in the first round, Red Springs outpaced Fairmont 41-38; Richmond defeated St. Pauls 63-31; and Lumberton defeated South Robeson 70-46.

St. Pauls was scheduled to face Fairmont at Red Springs on Thursday night and Purnell Swett was scheduled to be at South Robeson in the consolation brackets.

The Lady Wildcats were scheduled to be at Lumberton on Friday, December 20, in the semi-finals and Richmond was scheduled to face Red Springs in Fairmont. The championship games were set for Saturday at UNC Pembroke. Look for updates online at thedillonherald.com and in next week’s issues of THE DILLON HERALD!

The Lady Wildcats are also scheduled to participate in the Little Caesar’s Invitational beginning on Thursday, January 2. The Wildcats will face Bluffton in the opening round of the tournament.

UPDATE: Dillon’s Lady Wildcats advanced to the championship and won the Richmond County Shootout, defeating Robeson County 59-39. The Wildcats also finished in third place in the boys tournament. Read more about the rest of the tournament in next week’s issues of THE DILLON HERALD!
