Wildcats, Hayes Honored for State Championship Victory

Dillon Athletic Director and Head Coach Jackie Hayes was recognized for his 250th win.

Dillon High School held a special awards ceremony on Monday, December 9, to commemorate the Dillon Wildcats 41-3 state championship win over Fairfield Central on Friday.

Dillon District 4 Superintendent Ray Rogers and Dillon High Principal Dr. Shawn Johnson presided over the ceremony and presented each player, cheerleader, and coach with a special medallion. The state championship trophy was also on display.

“Every kid went to Columbia and played their best,” Rogers said. He also thanked the teachers.

“Everyone must dedicate one’s self to doing the best,” he added.

Athletic Director and Head Coach Jackie Hayes was also recognized for his 250th win, which came in Friday’s state championship game. Hayes’s record now stands at 250-50 in 22 seasons.

Hayes thanked the administration and all the school teachers. He emphasized the importance for his players to continue to focus on their academics.

“Academics then athletics,” he said. “One will not be able to play games all your life. Your real work begins now.”

He also thanked Mr. Wright, Mr. McLellan, and the band. Coaches Jason Gunter and Gerald Reeves were also recognized for 46 years of coaching the Wildcats.

“Everyone must work together,” Hayes said. “It’s a good team concept. One has to have help and work together for one common goal, and we reached our goal – a state championship.”
