Latta’s Coach Eva Tyrell Resigns

Latta’s Lady Vikings are once again without a softball coach.

Coach Eva Tyrell

Early last week, Eva Tyrell, who was set to replace Kimberly Griffith, announced that she would not be taking over Latta’s softball program after all. She announced her resignation on Monday, stating that her husband had accepted a job in Roswell, Georgia.

Tyrell said it was tough making the decision because of her history with the Latta program. Tyrell was a standout player for Latta in high school, pitching for 964 strikeouts and helping Latta to four straight Class A title appearances from 2003 to 2006. She was also named Class A Player of the Year twice during her high school career.

After high school, Tyrell played at the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio, where she majored in Early Childhood Education. She pitched for the Flyers for four years, recording 232 strikeouts, and had seven wins in 22 starts.

Tyrell spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Latta under Kimberly Griffith, who announced she was leaving at the end of last season to spend more time with her family. Griffith led Latta to the Region 8-A title and the District VIII title before the Lady Vikings finished as the 2013 Lower State runner-up.

Griffith replaced Coach Michael Rogers for the 2012-2013 volleyball and softball seasons. Rogers led the Lady Vikings to five Class A state championship appearances and 345 wins in his 22 years with Latta. He left Latta at the end of the 2012 season to take a job as an assistant principal at Dillon High, a role which allowed him to spend more time with his family.

While Latta has not yet announced who will replace Tyrell, Coach Kimberly Bean is still set to take over Latta’s volleyball program this fall. Bean has been coaching junior varsity volleyball for three years and worked closely with Coach Griffith to finish the volleyball schedule for the coming season.
