Lady Vikings Eliminate Trojans to Advance

Latta’s Lady Vikings eliminated the Green Sea-Floyds Trojan from the Class A lower state softball playoffs with a 4-3 win on Monday night in Latta.

The Lady Trojans took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning and held onto it until the bottom of the second when the Vikings earned two runs to tie things up. The Trojans added one run in the top of the third to pull ahead 3-2.

In the bottom of the fourth with one out, Latta’s Kayla Hyatt hit a single over the short stop to make it to base and Mikenzi Caniglia hit a fly for out number two. Madison Owens hit one past third to reach base and Tori Grimsley hit another one over third to load the bases. Seventh-grader Camryn Sawyer was next up to bat, hitting one over second base to score Hyatt and Owens to put Latta up 4-3. Raven Baxley flew out to end the inning with the Vikings in the lead, and neither team could score in the remaining innings, allowing the Vikings to advance in the playoffs with the 4-3 win.

Anna Rogers pitched a complete game for Latta, giving up two hits, three runs, one earned run, and one walk with one hit by pitch. She struck out 18 batters in the win.

Hope Elliott took the loss for Green Sea, pitching 4.3 innings for 10 hits, two runs, one earned run, one walk, and one out.

Madison Owens led the Lady Vikings at bat, going 3-for-4 with a RBI, and Tori Grimsley went 2-for-3 for Latta. Camryn Sawyer went 1-for-4 and picked up two RBI to seal the win for Latta. The Lady Vikings had 11 hits in the win.

Morgan Elliott went 1-for-4, hitting a double to lead Green Sea-Floyds at bat. The Lady Trojans had just two hits.

Latta’s record improved to 13-12 as they prepared to travel to Johnsonville on Wednesday for another elimination game. The winner will move on to face East Clarendon for the lower state title on Friday.
