Doug Pittman

COLUMBIA – Stuart Douglas (Doug) Pittman, 80, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at the Sterling House Assisted Living Facility, which he considered his home.  A worship service celebrating his life is planned for Wednesday, May, 8, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapin Baptist Church, 950 Old Lexington Highway, Chapin, SC and Reverend Philip Vaughn will be officiating.  Burial will follow at the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1:00 pm. Doug was born on October 28, 1932, a son of the late Napoleon Adar and Blanche Cottingham Pittman.  Doug was a proud veteran, serving in the United States Navy during the Korean War as an Aviation Electricians Mate aboard air craft carriers.  After his military service, he completed training in Columbia to become a meat cutter.  He worked in the grocery business for Winn Dixie for 21 years and for Piggly Wiggly an additional 21 years, serving as meat
department market manager for both.  He was a loving husband, father grandfather and great grandfather.
An avid sports fan, he played baseball, football and basketball, lettering in all three sports and serving as the basketball team captain while growing up in Lake View, SC.  He later coached youth sports in Dixie Youth and recreational leagues.  Doug enjoyed gardening and being outside.  He loved to talk to people and quickly made friends with anyone.  He had a talent of always remembering the faces and names of those he met.  He will be remembered by his family and those who knew him, as a good man.
Doug was a life-long member of Earlewood Baptist Church and most recently, Chapin Baptist Church.  While attending Earlewood Baptist Church, he served as Deacon, Brotherhood Director, Sunday School Teacher and pitcher for the church softball team.
He is predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Virginia Ranell (Nell) who was the love of his life.  He is also predeceased by his daughter, Pamela Gayle Carver; brothers; James Maxwell (Mack) Pittman, W. T. (Bill) Pittman, Jesse D. Pittman and sister, Marie Jenkins.      He is survived by his sons, Paul Douglas Pittman (Barbara) and Daryl Keith Pittman (Eva); grandchildren, Joseph Douglas (J. D.) Pittman (Kristy), Shane Michael Pittman (Lisa), Ashleigh Sareen Musselman (Dustin) and Tara Nicole Pittman; great grandchildren, Carleigh Jane Pittman and Aidan Matthias Musselman.  Also surviving are brothers A. D. Pittman, Robert Pittman and sisters, Jean Tyndall and Helen Campbell.
