Lady Cavaliers Stop Warriors 12-2

By Craig Brown

The Dillon Christian School Lady Warriors traveled to Bishopville Tuesday for a non-region game at Robert E. Lee Academy, falling 12-2 to the Lady Cavaliers.

The weather changed from sunny to a light rain by game time resulting in some wet playing conditions. The Warriors actually played very well on defense but the wet ball was difficult for the very petite Warrior pitcher, Jamie Carpenter, to handle. Carpenter normally allows two players per game to base on walks but small hands and wet balls don’t mix well. Carpenter had five batters make it to base on walks and three hit by pitches. The Cavalier pitchers stood about eight inches taller with larger hands and were able to control the damp balls a little better.

Lauren Lee got the game’s opening score. Lee made it to base on a fielder’s choice hit and then stole second base. Lee worked her way to third as the Cavalier catcher had the ball slip out of her glove. Sarah Fitzgibbon sent a hit to left field bringing Lee home for the score.

The Cavaliers answered in the bottom of the first inning with Kay Farmer sending a two run homer over the left field fence for a 2-1 lead. The Cavaliers extended their lead to 9-1 in the second inning and 12-2 by the end of the third inning. Both teams, hindered by the rain, could do little in the way of hitting the rest of the game. Carpenter did post three strikeouts in this difficult weather game.

At bat for the Warriors, Sarah Fitzgibbon was 2-for-2 with a RBI; Makalai Sweat was 1-for-2 with a fielder’s choice RBI; Ansley Hamer made it to second base on a fielder’s error and scored a run; Lauren Lee made it to base on a fielder’s choice hit, adding two stolen bases and scoring a run; and Greta Seay made it to base on a walk, adding a stolen base.

On defense, Sarah Fitzgibbon played a perfect game. Others that displayed some top play were Greta Seay, who was moved to first base for this game; Kathryn Brown at second; Makalai Sweat at third; and Lauren Lee at catcher. Outfielders Madison King, Katie Tyner, and Ansley Hamer struggled a little in the weather but gave great efforts. Jamie Carpenter played as well as could be expected on the mound for these conditions.

Head Coach Norm Norton was very pleased with his team’s good attitude throughout the game.

The Warriors will play in Florence on Friday in a non-region game with Trinity-Byrnes at 5:00 p.m. and close out the regular season on Monday with a region game against Williamsburg Academy at 5:00 p.m.
