Kirkin’ Of The Tartans Is January 27th

By Bill Lee
At 3 p.m. on Sunday, January 27 at historic Pee Dee Presbyterian Church  there will be held the Annual Kirkin’ of the Tartans.  This is essentially a service commemorating our Scottish heritage although the service was actually originated in America.  The term “kirk” in Scotland is a word for church; the word “tartan” in the service title refers to what many refer to as a Scottish plaid, that is, a woven cloth material that has a distinctive pattern for each Scottish family group called a clan.
The tartan …described as “chequered” or “striped” or “sundrei coloured”… is generally incorporated in the traditional Scottish wearing apparel, now mostly ceremonial.  For men this includes among other accessories, a tartan-designed skirt-like kilt; for women the tartan is typically displayed in the shoulder sash or in a lengthened skirt.
The Pee Dee service conducted by The Rev. Dr. Eugen G. Bach, Jr. will also include music provided by a St. Andrews  University bagpiper, the bearing/presentation of the Family Tartan Banners and the presentation of the Bible by the kilted Beadle who in the early days was the keeper of the only Bible available to the congregation.
While mostly Scottish in emphasis, we welcome the entire ethnic diversity membership of the community to be a part of this worship celebration.
If you are blessed with Scottish ancestry, come and show your “colors” by dressing for the event.  The full regalia would help to make the occasion special or perhaps you might prefer a more modest necktie, scarf or any other Scottish clan identification.
Pee Dee Presbyterian Church  is located in Dillon County on Pee Dee Church Road off SC9 East and just beyond the American Legion meeting place.  Coming from Dillon take a right at the next paved intersection (Mt. Calvary/Pee Dee Church Road).  The church will be on your left near the TV tower.
