Bob Braddy: Cameron Adams Performing In New York

By Bob Braddy
When the curtain opens for another performance of “Nice Work If You Can Get It” at Broadway’s Imperial Theatre, the audience will be greeted by the Chorus  Girls dancing to the upbeat rhythm of Gershwin’s “Sweet and Lowdown”.   Cameron Adams of  Myrtle Beach  will be dancing with the chorus.
Cameron is the daughter of  Terry and Sandra Adams. Sandra, the daughter of Rae and Nannie MacDonald.  grew up in the Carolina community of Dillon County and graduated Dillon High School.   Her  uncle, Bobby MacDonald, is well known in the Dillon area for his piano accomplishments.  A former dance instructor in Myrtle Beach, she was Cameron’s first dance teacher and now  is resident choreographer for The Theatre of The Republic in Conway.
Now that we have established  Cameron’s Dillon County family connections, let’s talk about her successes on Broadway. “Nice Work” opened on Broadway in April  of this year and has played to capacity audiences since its beginning.  Predictions are that it will run for a long time.  It is a classic Broadway musical created around the music of George and Ira Gershwin.    It stars Matthew Broderick and Kelli O’Hara, both of whom have  more hits and Tonys  than we can list.   Cameron was in the original cast as a dancer in the chorus and now understudies Kelli in her leading female role of Billie.  Cameron got to  perform the lead several times in September, and again in October.
Her first Broadway performance was in the revival of “The Music Man” in 2000.  She was 17 and a junior at Myrtle Beach High School.  She played in the ensemble, but within 6 months she got the featured role of Mayor Shinn’s daughter, Zaneeta Shinn.  She has also performed on Broadway in “Oklahoma”,  “Hairspray”, “Promises, Promises”,  “Shrek”,“Cry-Baby”,  and “How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying”, where she was the understudy for the lead role of “Rosemary” opposite Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) .
She performed on TV in ABC/Disney’s “ The Music Man.” Alice and I were  able to see “Nice Work” when we were in New York in October.
It is a thoroughly entertaining, clean, happy musical, loaded with Gershwin favorites.  The sets are spectacular.
Unfortunately, we were not able to speak to Cameron, but we spotted her in the chorus.   If you get to New York, please make plans to see it.
