Joseph Thomas ‘Tommy’ Squires

Latta – Joseph Thomas “Tommy” Squires, Jr., 82, died in Carolinas Hospital System in Florence S.C., Saturday, December 1, 2012. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, December 3, 2012 at Latta United Methodist Church in Latta, SC. Visitation will be held in the Church fellowship hall following the service. Kannaday Funeral Home in Latta is assisting the family.

Mr. Squires was born in Florence, SC, December 2, 1929, the son of the late Joseph Thomas Squires, Sr. and Marie St. Clair Shipp Squires. Mr. Squires was a retired United States Department of Agriculture agent.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years Jacqueline Squires; son, Joseph T. Squires, III of Darlington, MD; daughters, Jacqueline of North Myrtle Beach, SC, Judith of McClellanville, SC, and Jane of Latta; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Wilson Squires and a sister, Marie St. Clair Squires.

Tommy was a graduate of Latta High School and Clemson College class of 1952 with a B. S. degree in Animal Husbandry. He was a veteran of The Korean Conflict serving in the US Army. He was a member of Latta United Methodist Church and the Men’s Bible Class. He was a charter member and past president of The Dillon County Rifle and Gun Club, and Sons of The Confederate Veterans, Stackhouse Camp, Latta, SC, where he was past historian. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association, a National Wild Turkey Federation sponsor, member of Ducks Unlimited, Quail Unlimited and The Dillon County Shrimpers. Tommy was an avid outdoorsman, expert marksman, enjoyed saltwater fishing, cribbage, and reading.
