Walk To School Day Observed

WALK TO SCHOOL DAY—International Walk to School Day is a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day. It began in 1997 as a one-day event. Over time, this event has  become part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school and a celebration – with record breaking participation – each October.  It was observed at East Elementary School on Wednesday, October 3. The event is coordinated by physical education teacher, Jennifer Walters.  During PE class the students watched videos that were provided by SC Safe Routes Program.  Each student also received a SC Safe Routes to School bracelet. International Walk to School Day can help initiate conversations with your students about how walking and biking can: enhance your health by increasing the amount of physical activity, improve air quality by reducing automobile  emissions in your school zone, and make the streets safer by
relieving traffic congestion.
