Dillon’s Jim Carr finished in fourth place and Lake View’s Ashley Rogers finished ninth in the South Carolina Junior Golf Association’s Tommy Cuthbert All Stars.
The All Stars Championship tournament is a two-day stroke play competition made up of the point winners in each of the 19 chapters of the Hootie and the Blowfish Junior Golf Summer Series. The Pee Dee Chapter All Stars included Carr and Rogers, as well as eight other players from Florence and one from Turbeville.
The tournament began on Saturday, August 25, with good weather. In the Boys 13-14, Carr tied for second place with Jonathan Mitchell of Graniteville, with each shooting a 75, just one point behind leader Jamie Wilson with a 74. Carr’s fellow Pee Dee competitor, Jacob Thompson of Florence, shot a 90.
In the Boys 8-9, Florence’s Gene Zeigler finished fourth with a 47. Jonathan Griz of Bluffton took the top spot with a 34.
Colin Trahan of North Augusta and Drew Weary of Bluffton each shot a 39 to lead the Boys 10-12. Florence’s Cameron Mills and James Potter finished further down the list with a 50 and a 52, respectively.
In the Boys 15-18 division, Charlie Dallery of Sumter shot a 76 to lead. Florence’s Nick Schuster finished near the middle of the field with an 85.
In the Girls 11-13, Florence’s Shino Sonoda tied with five other players for the top spot, each shooting a 49. Florence’s Kiana Baker tied with Hilton Head’s Anna Eddy with 52 each. In the Girls 8-10, Jalen Castle of West Columbia finished first with a 38.
Rogers finished 10th on day one in the Girls 14-18 with a 102. Brandi Hammonds of Bluffton led the division with an 80. Sarina Sonoda of Florence finished fourth with a 90.
Day two of the tournament on Sunday, August 26, saw some fierce winds ahead of Hurricane Isaac that interfered with some of the afternoon play, but the weather was otherwise fair.
In the Boys 13-14 division, Dillon’s Carr tied for third with Kyle Spencer of Mt. Pleasant, each earning a two-day total of 159. Carr lost the card playoff and ended up with fourth place overall. He shot an 84 on day two.
Jamie Wilson of Mt. Pleasant won the division championship with a 77, giving him a two day total of 151. Cameron Bunch of Bamberg finished second with 78 and a 155 overall. Florence’s Thompson, shot an 89 on day two for a total of 179.
In the Boys 8-9. Griz claimed the championship with a total of 75, while Florence’s Zeigler finished third with a 40 on day two for a total of 87. In the 10-12, Dixon Flowers of Sumter shot a 35 on day two for a total of 79 and the win. Florence’s Mills and Potter shot a 57 and 56 on day two to finish with a 107 and 108 respectively. In the 15-18, Charleston’s Lucas McNellis shot a total of 153 for first place, and Florence’s Schuster shot a 78 on day two for a total of 163.
In the Girls divisions, West Columbia’s Jensen Castle finished first with a total of 94, with Florence’s Shino Sonoda finished third with a 47 on day two and a 96 overall. Baker finished with a 110 total. In 8-10, Jalen Castle claimed victory with a two-day total of 81.
In the Girls 14-18, Bluffton’s Hammonds finished first with a two-day total of 162. Florence’s Sarina Sonoda finished fifth with a 97 on day two and a 187 overall. Lake View’s Ashley Rogers finished ninth overall, shooting a 103 on day two for a total of 205.
The Mt. Pleasant Chapter defended won the Boys Team title for the second year in a row, finishing 20 strokes ahead of the Hilton Head Island Chapter. Mount Pleasant also defended their 2011 Girls Championship, 17 shots ahead of Aiken.
