Sylvia Griffin Attends School Boards Association ‘Day At The Capital’

Sylvia Griffin attended the South Carolina School Boards Association annual “Day at the Capital” which was held on May 2, 2012 at the Capital City Club in Columbia.
School Board members from across the State met with their respective legislators to discuss pending bills including:
Equal Access to Interscholastic Activities Act requiring school districts to permit home school students, charter school students and students in the state’s two Governor Schools to participate in interscholastic activities; K-12 Education Budget House bill 4813 an addition to $152.7 million in recurring new money to the base student cost increasing the BSC to $2,012.00 from the current year amount of $1,880.00; and amendment prohibiting furloughs unless there is a mid-year reduction in state funding; Tuition Tax Credits and Vouchers House Bill 4894 authorizing a state income tax deduction of up to $4,000.00 for tuition (fees for attending the school and school related transportation) paid by a parent for their child or ward to attend an independent school defined as a school, other than a public school; Public School Choice Program Act Senate Bill 1267 – beginning with the 2014–2015 school year, parents may enroll their child in any public school
in the state without having to pay tuition, and districts must determine students’ assignments base on capacity (established by local boards); Bus Privatization Act of 2012 House Bill 4610 which would give individual districts the opportunity to operate bus fleets themselves or “opt-in: to an outsourced model during a transition period (South Carolina operated the only state-run school bus system in the country).
