Lady Wildcats Claim First State Track and Field Championship

The Dillon Wildcats claimed the State Championship in Track and Field on Saturday, May 12, at Spring Valley High School. It is Dillon High’s first state championship in girls track.

The team’s final score was 72, with Waccamaw in second at 58 and Bishop England in third with a 54.

“These young ladies went in determined and motivated, and it paid off in a tremendous way,” Coach Bishop Washington said.

In the individual events, Kadejah Sellers took first place in the 400 Meter Dash with a time of 57.75 and Pamela Robinson finished third with a time of 59.40.

Zipporah Lighty finished first in both the Girls Shot Put (39-02.50) and Girls Discus Throw (105-04), and Tejah Breeden finished seventh in the Girls Long Jump at 15-10.00

Kedisha Davis finished second in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.46, and Amber Berry finished third in the Girls 400 Meter Hurdles with a time of 1:09.18.

Dillon’s girls finished first in both the Girls 4×100 Relay and the Girls 4×400 Relay. In the 4×100, the team total was 48.44 with Kedisha Davis, Jessica Manning, Dejah Tyson, and Kadejah Sellers running and Amber Berry as an alternate. In the 4×400, Dillon finished with a time of 4:03.86 with Jessica Manning, Shea Carmichael, Kadejah Sellers, and Pamela Robinson running and Linzy Boatwright as an alternate.

The Dillon girls also won the Lower State title at the Lower State Meet held at Marion High School on Saturday, May 5.

“This was the year for these young ladies to prove themselves, and they did just that and earned the State Championship title, and made history for Dillon High School,” Washington said.

Washington said the coaching staff – including Coach Gunter and Coach Gray – provided dedication and discipline which helped motivate the kids to put their best efforts on the track.

“The boys and the girls had an amazing season with many accomplishments. We are proud of them all,” he said. “We are grateful to everyone who supported us this season, and we hope to strive even harder next year.”

In the Class A meet, also held at Spring Valley High on Saturday, Latta had athletes competing as well.

Latta’s Kierra Johnson finished fifth in the Girls 100 Meter Hurdles with a time of 17.97.

In the Girls 4×400 Meter Relay, Latta finished sixth with a time of 4:25.20. Alexia McLeod, Jessica Evans, Kierra Johnson, and Shakira Fleming ran for the Vikings, with Katie Williams as an alternate.

Christ Church took home the Class A state title with a team score of 58. Southside Christian finished second with a 57 and Johnsonville was third with a score of 53.
